Super congested while sleeping?

I guess this is a pregnancy thing, but oh my God it is so hard to sleep! I guess I make noises and breathe funny. DH keeps waking me up to stop (my how things have changed)

Is there something I can do? If I'm on my back I guess I make more noises but I'm on my left side I wake up because I'm so stuffy.Oh, and then my butt goes numb and I have sciatica pain. Good times lol

Any suggestions?

Re: Super congested while sleeping?

  • No major suggestions beyond trying a humidifier and lots of pillows. I had a Snoogle and it was awesome. I had the congestion plus pg-induced asthma so I slept with a combination of like 5-6 pillows that finally propped me up on my back so that I could sleep!

The only real cure comes in about 20 weeks.... sorry!

  • I had to wear breathe right strips. EXTRA sexxy but it worked! And I slept on the sofa a lot. It was somehow easier to sleep that way.
  • you can take benedryl and it will help you sleep too!

  • Ah the joys of pregnancy.  I slept upright for most of the last half of each pregnancy.  I couldn't breathe otherwise.

  • I'm not sure what you can do but you aren't alone.  While I wouldn't say I was super congested through my pregnancy I definitely noticed my nose was more "productive" - gross I know.  But I would avoid trying to sleep on your back since they don't recommend that while you are preggers....but how about some extra pillows?  Maybe?

My DH spent one night last week in the guest room. I go to bed first, and I guess my noises were keeping him up. Oops!

I read to avoid sleeping on your back after the 1st tri, because as the baby gets bigger it puts pressure on the arteries in your back and can cut off circulation to baby and your legs. I used to be a belly sleeper, and without that option and laying on my back, I was a mess for a while. The Boppy cuddle pillow really helps me get comfortable enough that I'm able to sleep on my side. If I sleep without it now, even for a nap, my back is in serious pain when I get up.

  • I had the same problem. I slept pretty much completely sitting up with 6 or 7 pillows behind me. I also used breathe right strips and a humidifier in the room. And DH and I slept in separate rooms the last 4 or 5 weeks of my pregnancy, because he couldn't stand sleeping next to all the pillows or listening to me blow my nose at night. haha.

The good news is that it really does go away once the baby is born. I was totally cleared up within an hour or so after delivery! And it was like an epiphany...hey! I can breathe!! Hang in there!!

So true, all of it! The night I had Maddy I slept better in the hospital than I had for months!
