Wall Paper removal HELP!!

Our kitchen is U.G.L.Y!! we have horrible chicken wire *design* wallpaper. and the previous owners must have used KILLER glue, becuase that crap is NOT coming off! What can I use short of ripping the walls down, which was one option we had. :) YAY-NOT!

FYI- we've tried scouring the wall- then useing the spray removal stuff, NOTHING, using fabric softener-NOTHING- what other ideas do you DIY/Homeowners have?

TIA

Re: Wall Paper removal HELP!!

  • We have the same problem. I posted on Decorating and Renovating and most people said just sand the wall. Which of course presents a whole other issue - having to retexturize. We may just hire someone to do it. Luckily it's a room in our basement that doesn't get much traffic, vs. your kitchen...

  • Have you tried a wallpaper steamer? That's what we've done and it worked on some 50 yr old wall paper in our first house.. You can buy one at Home Depot/Lowes for about $40

  • now for a REALLY dumb question, how to use a steamer?
  • The steamer has a "plate" that is about the size of a piece of paper (8x10 maybe?) that you hold up to the wall.. it loosens the paper away from the glue. You also have to "score" the wallpaper first.. They make these little tools: http://www.amazon.com/Zinsser-2966-PaperTiger-Scoring-Wallpaper/dp/B0000DI7WP

You basically make little circles over the wall while holding that thing.. it makes small tears in the paper so the steam can get behind it more easily.. Then hold the steamer plate up to the wall for 10-20 seconds til the paper is soaked and then use a putty knife or wallpaper scraper to scrape the paper off..

This is the steamer we have: http://www.amazon.com/Wagner-Products-282018-1-Gallon-Wallpaper/dp/B0009XEL4O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1302291937&sr=1-1

The good part about the steamer is you don't have to use chemicals to remove the paper which is good with little ones/pets around!

  • We used a steamer and it worked like a charm on the paper, but not the glue. Victoria, hopefully you'll have better luck!
