f/u blood in urine- tmi

So some of you asked what ended up happening last night... I am not trying to be a drama queen, but here is what happened...

Forewarning, this might be TMI....

Hubby and I ended up in the emergency room for several hours. I guess I really didn't realize how serious it was until I saw the results of his urine in a cup... Holy crap I was scared... it wasn't just a little blood... it was super red... like his pee was a dark red...

The doctor was actually great about explaining things... they found both white and red blood cells in his urine which is very unusual for a 28 year old male. They gave him antibiotics for a bloody urinary tract infection, but she wants us to follow up with a urologist on Monday. The doctor kept dropping the big C word, which scared us both...

I learned a lot about this last night and have read up on things this morning...  Guys typically get urinary tract infections over the age of 50. Under the age of 50 is very uncommon, but it does happen. Typically they could mean problems with the following:

1. Kidney - he wasn't having any problems with his kidney, blood work came back normal.

2. Liver - his liver levels came back good as well

3. Prostate - the doctor was very worried that it has something to relate to his prostate. She kept saying Cancer, over and over... very scary. Although my hubby does have his young age on his side.

He is on antibiotics currently and I scheduled an appointment with the doctor on Monday afternoon.

I know the ER doctor isn't necessarily an Urologist and doesn't know all the answers. So I am trying to be positive and be strong for Eric... last night was definitely a very long night for the both of us.... I definitely wanted to cry and fall apart because I am scared, but I stayed strong. I am not trying to be a drama queen and overreact, but last night was very scary....

I also learned that it is basically impossible for me to squash his testicals while having sex too.. (Thought I would pass that along..) Wink

  • Wow, I hope Eric is ok and it is just a random UTI with no complications.  Please keep us posted.  My thoughts go out to both you and him, as I know it must be really scary.

    Definitely all of this!
  • Holy sh!t.  That's is scary.

Sending thoughts and prayers that it's just an infection that will easily be taken care of since it seems to have been caught relatively early.

  • Oh no! I hope you get some good news from the doctor on Monday.

The "good" news about prostate cancer is that it's extremely treatable, especially when caught early on.  I hope you don't have to worry about that, though, and it's just a UTI.

  • Good thoughts in your direction; hopefully antibiotics will clear it up and he'll be back to (almost) normal by Monday.

I'm sure the ER doc is just trying to make sure that it's not taken lightly and that he gets proper follow-up... they have to see people all the time who just let things go and don't take care of small things until they become major issues. I'm glad you have the appt with his normal doc for Monday... Even though logically UTI makes sense, I'd still be freaking out a bit in my head too.  << hugs >>

  • Sorry Jen!  Praying for a good result.  Try not to worry too much in the mean time.  I realize that's easier said than done.  The doc probably just wanted to prepare you for the worst JIC.

  • Wow, that's really scary!  I'm praying that it is just a UTI that came out of nowhere, and that there's no other problems.  But like a PP said, if it does turn out to be prostate cancer, rest in knowing that it is very treatable.  I have a friend who had prostate cancer in his early 20's.  He's now 39 and has beautiful triplets and a fantastic life.  However, I will definitely be praying that there's no cancer in your husband's body, and that the antibiotics will take care of everything, and he'll be back to normal in no time. Please keep us posted on how things go.  While I know you want to be strong for him, you don't have to be strong here.  Love and hugs!

  • Ditto to PPs. Definitely sending cancer-free and healthy thoughts and prayers your way. I know from when my dad was in the ER two years ago, the doctors were very quick to throw out the C word and it was terrifying, so I am hoping that the docs were just trying to convey the potential severity of the issue so that he would do a follow up with the correct specialist and it will end up being a UTI or something else relatively innocuous. If he does get the news that it is cancer, feel free to PM me to talk. DH was diagnosed with Hodgekin's Lymphoma right before we met and after 6 months of chemo and radiation, he was cancer-free.  T&Ps that it's nothing though! And keep us posted!
