Tell me about Safari West, if you've been

As a s/o to my big AW about going to Kenya in a week or so, I'm trying to find ways to make it up to my dh. I was thinking that maybe saving up some $$ and splurging for one of the overnight stays at Safari West might be nice.

If you went, did it feel like you were on Safari?

Anyone spend the night?

Anything else you can tell me about this place?

Re: Tell me about Safari West, if you've been

  • My H and I went to Safari West a few years ago.  We both really liked it.  It sorta had a safari feel, but sorta not.  Still very enjoyable though and you get to see a lot of cool animals.

We did not spend the night, but I think it would be really cool to wake up and see animals roaming around.

  • I've never been, but wanted to so I looked into it-They have discount rates on full moons. Not sure why...Maybe the animals are more unpredictable??? Stick out tongue
  • We're going at the end of the month.  I've rented a new, big lens and I'm really looking forward to it!
  • I went with a group of friends for my birthday last year. It was awesome and I highly recommend it. We couldn't stay over that night but it looks fab and I'd do it in a heart beat (just prepare well/read their FAQ because I bet it gets cold).

It is a bit of a cross between a zoo and a safari, with some animals in pens and some roaming freely, but the overall feel of the tour is safari and just generally fun.

We got to sit up on the 2nd level of the jeep for the 2nd third of the tour (right before going up into the hills) and that was not only a blast and really added to the experience, but the views are breathtaking. There is nothing to block your view up top so, if physically you can manage it, I highly advise you to tell the tour guide you want to sit up top for part of the tour (ideally a bit later in the tour when you climb a bit and there are great views).

FYI, I had a blast with my camera and a telephoto lens, if either of you are into photography.

It was a lot of fun and definitely worth the money. I think your idea is a great one and you guys should go for it. Be sure to take lots of pictures and report back how it went! I'd *love* to know what staying over is like. :)
