Since Congress decided to settle the budget issued and DH won't be furloughed, I'm resuming my 5th anniversary vacation planning. DH and I have been tossing around a few ideas but so far nothing is striking us as a "must do." Maybe you ladies can help out with suggestions?
Here are the important details: we can go for approximately 1 week any time during the first two weeks of August. DD will be staying at home with her grandparents. I can handle warm summer weather (temps in the 80s) but I really dislike very hot weather (temps 90+). We went to Vancouver and on an Alaskan cruise for our honeymoon. We like cruises and land-based vacations equally. I would like to keep the vacation to $4k or less.
I was interested in going to Maui and/or Kauai but after checking airfare from Boston to Honolulu, the airfare would take up half our budget, and food and lodging on the islands isn't cheap. ![]()
Places currently under consideration are San Francisco, Seattle, another Alaska cruise, New England cruise.
Any suggestions of other places to consider or comments about the places under consideration?
Re: Help me pick a vacation
Then definitely don't browse over to the travel board. It makes my domestic vacation seem pretty blah, too!
I'm sure you'll have a fun anniversary lunch! Our actual anniversary day (July 23) will probably involve something very similar.
But suddenly I think I deserve a vacation too!
if you're looking for something beachy, have you considered the Florida Keys? I haven't been, but I figure they're cheaper to fly to and you'll spend less time getting there or having to adjust to a time change...
if you're up for a little road trip, H and I flew out to Seattle with another couple a few years back, rented a car, spent a few days there and drove down the coast - stopped in Portland, went rafting on the Rogue River, wine-tasting in Napa and ended in San Francisco - I think we did it in 9 days, but you could easily chop it to a week (we had to fit in stuff we all wanted to see, as opposed to just being the two of you...) - we had a ton of fun
We went to Prince Edward Island for our honeymoon in August and I highly recommend it, it is very small and relaxing... we drove from here and stayed overnight in Moncton, New Brunswick. There are a ton of mini golf places, touristy museums, and really good ice cream! It also wasn't very expensive... I think the whole trip was around $2500.
The weather is nice too, 60s-80s and it is a gorgeous island that one day we just drove around the perimeter checking out the views
I would love to go to PEI, that sounds like a great trip! Also, I really enjoyed my trip to SF, it's a cool city. The only thing I didn't get to do that I really wanted to is get out to Napa.
Good luck deciding
I always forget about PEI and I really want to go there. Definitely a beautiful spot!
Same here! On our honeymoon we swore we would go on another cruise for our 5 year anniversary. Turns out we will be in North Conway with Eli going to Storyland and A Day Out with Thomas. Sure to be fun, but oh how times change!
As for advice, we went on a western carribean cruise after spending a night in Ft. Lauderdale for our honeymoon in July and had a blast. It was a little hot, but it was really affordable since it was off season. I would love to go on an Alaskan cruise, but I feel like you should do something different this time. No matter what I'm sure you'll have a great time!
I love this idea! I think it would be a really fun trip and the weather should be pretty ideal.
Another idea is Montreal or Toronto. Montreal was one of our honeymoon stops. We went in July and the weather was ideal - 70s and low 80s. There was so much to explore - especially if you like museums - and eat. We easily could have stayed a week.
We did SF and Napa in May a few years ago for 9 days and LOVED it. It made for a very fun sight seeing trip.
It's definitely the opposite end of beachy, but you could look into some national park vacations- Yellowstone, Glacier, Rushmore/ Crazy Horse, Grand Canyon. We are big fans of the natural wonder vacations, so it's often a first option on our to-go lists.
Is Chicago miserably hot that time of year? It's a fun city with a lot of offer, but if it's sweltering, I imagine it would be miserable.
And what about Bermuda? It's certainly closer and further north and less in the hurricane path- it might be nice weather and you'd get the beach aspect.
Thanks for all the suggestions! We're adding in PEI as a possible destination. Yosemite would be neat, too. Decisions, decisions!
Erika - Chicago gets pretty hot in the summer. Plus, I've been to Chicago, so it doesn't hold as much appeal to me as going somewhere I've never been. We've also seen the Grand Canyon (plus that would be HOT in August). South Dakota would be pretty hot, too. I have family in SD (on the other side of the state from Mt. Rushmore and it gets plenty warm in the summer).
I'm going to also say PEI, although I've never been there, my aunt and her husband were telling us recently that it was probably their favorite vacation they've been on and they go on at least 2 big vacays every year.
I recently went on a Norwegian Cruise to the Bahamas and while the cruise ship was amazing, it was hot hot hot everywhere we stopped and that was in March. I know Norwegian does a cruise out of Boston to Bermuda in August and I put that on my to do list. You get the pluses of a cruise, but you spend 3 days in Bermuda so you really get to enjoy the destination.
