Well, I bit the bullet and went to the Grand Opening sale at the Marietta Performance location. I worked with Dave, and he was great. I took several bikes out for a ride. I definitely understand now what it means when people say you *know* when you've found the right bike. I ended up with a Fuji. It was really one of those "too good to pass up" moments. I signed up for their membership program, so I got 20% points back, plus 15% off the bike, plus the $20 gift card they were handing out...and most of it is getting paid for with CC reward points! Whew! I can't believe how it worked out!
I had them put on in-line (crossbar, I think he called them too??) brakes since I'm just starting out. And they put on my Cateye computer. So it's ready, but I'm going to pick it up on Wed and get my fitting done at the same time. DH and I are going to ride with my school team for the MS ride in September, so I'm glad I have a training goal to work towards. Thanks for your help!
Re: SB - new bike
Sawwweeeeeeeettt! Which one did you wind up with? New bikes are like warm fuzzies!!! A great deal is always a plus! Fuji seems to spec out bikes better at a lower price point than some of the other major brands. I WANT TO SEE PICTURES!!!
LMK when/if you want to ride together. I'd be happy to take you out during the week and help you get used to your new bike, show you the shifting, etc.
I'll warn you about top mount brake levers. They are DANGEROUS for group riding, much like aerobars. I'd remove them as soon as you become comfortable on the bike. The brake cables are run through them, and it decreases the stopping power of the brakes when you are on the hoods or in the drops. Most of the time, you should be on the hoods when you are riding in a group and not "on top" of the bar (ie with your hands on the "flat" part of the bar by the stem). You have much more control when your hands are on the brake hoods or in the drops. The decrease in stopping power may not affect much if you are JRA (just riding along), but it can make a difference in an emergency stop. You may wish to have them tighten the brakes a little bit, so that you can accentuate (pull) them with very little effort from the top of the brake hoods. This is usually a cable adjustment. Having said that, I use them on my cyclocross bikes b/c they help with braking when you are on top of the bar, which I am sometimes in cross. I don't use them on my road bike.
I'm really excited for you! (Pardon the rambling. I'm exhausted.)
