The two things I can't stand:
Mopping the kitchen and wood floors
and
cleaning the bathrooms (especially the Master Shower that doesn't have a spray thingy).
What are some alternatives to the ole' mop and bucket method?
Re: House Cleaning Rants
I loved my steam mop until it died. I'm the only person I've ever heard of who killed it though, so it was probably my fault. And it wasn't from overuse - it probably died of neglect.
Anyway....since then I got this thing. Except I paid $20 at Target. It's a lot like the swiffer mop except you don't have to buy their disposable pads and their cleaning solution -- you can use whatever you want. I use hot water + vinegar + lemon extract. Works great! It moves around better than the swiffer and covers more area, too.
Bathrooms - ugh. Hire someone? I haven't found a method that I love, and everything that works for me involves using a bunch of chemicals that I hate to use.
My silly Lily is almost 4.
I've never heard of a steam mop... maybe because I steer clear of anything with mop in the title. HA.
I'll check it out. Thanks.

I bet I could kill the steam cleaner too from neglect. I'll check out the link you posted. I don't like having to buy those disposable pads. What a rip off! So it is nice when things can be taken off, cleaned, and reused!

I LOVE my steam mop! We used swiffer for way too long. Our whole downstairs is tile and the swiffer never got it completely clean. I actually feel like the floors get clean with the steam mop!
This is the one I have:

I used to adore our Shark steam mop until I killed it one day and was forced to bust out the mop and bucket. When I started mopping with the old school mop I realized just how much dirt the steam mop didn't get off our white tile. I was disgusted and will never go back to a steam mop unless it has scrubbers on it.
I HATE cleaning our shower! It really needs updating, there are so many cracks and corners that I just can't get to and they look nasty all the time.

I use this spray - http://www.flooranddecoroutlets.com/s54502949.html
and got something similar to pp's http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003UA7F46/ref=asc_df_B003UA7F461501118?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B003UA7F46
It works great. I also use Swiffer tile cleaner pads (the wet ones)
If you are pro-chemicals, I recommend Tilex Mold and Mildew spray. Just turn the fan on and shut the door for a while. That stuff could take tar off it's so strong. There's no scrubbing involved.
For shower walls, I use a broom on mine. I hose it down with Tilex, let it sit for 5 minutes, put some water in the tub and then dip the broom in the water, and then "sweep" the shower walls. A simple rinse makes everything bright and shiny. Gets everything clean, I'm not leaning over to scrub, and takes 15 minutes max.
For tile floors, I just used our carpet shampooer/cleaner. I would drop it to the lowest setting and let those scrubbers do their work on the tile with some Green Works cleaner in the tank. Again, in 15 minutes I could do the dining room, kitchen and 2 bathrooms.
As for wood, I always used Murphy's Oil soap (squirt and spray bottle) and a microfiber mop. Worked better than any swiffer or steam mop IMO. A little rough on the back though.
For our bathrooms I use the Oxyclean foam stuff and it works GREAT! Much better than the spray. I do keep a bottle of the spray in our shower and spray down the shower walls about once a week while I am in there to help in between deep cleanings which seems to help.
I hate cleaning our floors. We have wood floors throughout and I use the swiffer. Not my favorite product but it is quick and easy. For our bathroom floors, which we have slate floors, I sponge down the floor with vinegar mixture. It's hard on the back, but it's the best way I have found to clean the texture of slate.

I'm a big fan of the shark steam mop too & love that the pads are machine washable. I've used it on wood, tile & linoleum. It's especially nice when the dog tracks in muddy pawprints... really quick & easy.
I'm no help to make shower cleaning easier. I've been known to jump in there with a toothbrush & scrub the grout.
