Crocus planting question

I recently bought two small pots of crocuses at the grocery store.  They've been in my house since I bought them and have already bloomed and the flowers have died.  Some of the leaves are still green.

My question is: should I plant these outside soon, or should I just keep them in the garage until fall and plant them then?   I've never had crocuses before but I've always planted my tulips in the fall and didn't know if I should do the same with these?

Thanks!

Re: Crocus planting question

  • IMO you can go either way. If you plant now they obviously won't do anything this year, but will be fine by next spring. If you let them hang out and green for a while to store up energy, then store and plant in the fall, they should be fine as well.

I have the same thing with some daffodils. I think I'll keep them in their pot for another month and then toss them in the ground.

  • Well if you don't know what kind of crocus they are you won't know if they will even survive in your area.  If you are willing to give it a try anyway keep the pot in the sun and water it regularly for the next couple months until the leaves turn brown.  Then in the fall you can plant them in the ground.
  • Okay, thanks!  All the tag says is "crocus blue".  They didn't look like the pics I got when I googled that.  Mine were very purple.

  • I'd wait til fall.  I have a pot of tulips that was given to me in Feb and now it's totally brown but I'm keeping it to plant in the flower bed in the fall.
  • After I hardened them off, I plant my store bought blooming bulbs in the spring.
