MIL: you guys are sure spending alot of money!

We have been saving money to purchase things that we have been doing without for awhile that we need around the house like a kitchen table that seats our entire family, nice pots, drapes for the living area, and a twin bed for our two year old; getting ready for the baby etc.  She made a comment one day and said "You guys are sure spending alot of money" as if she wanted for me to tell her where the money came from or how could we afford to do such things.  I simply said "We are buying things that WE need around the house...just like any other family, and I left it at that...no further explanations!   I think that it is hilarious! Keep your eyes in your own wallot lady!!!!!

Re: MIL: you guys are sure spending alot of money!

  • Sounds like my mother in law. Ugghh she just urks me
  • If my MIL makes comments like that, I just tell her we're rich.

  • We still haven't mentioned our new fridge. It's been on our list of wants for 6 years. But since I went out and bought a new dining room set (also on our 6 year list of wants) and we've redone the family room we knew we'd hear something.  So if/when she ever visits she'll say something and I'll say 'That old thing?'.

I've learned to say 'we all budget for what's important to us'. Sorry, too many years of hearing her gripe about not being able to retire but watching her spend, spend, spend and then make comments about my Dh being cheap bc we pass on things like the casino.

  • This is one of the many reasons I could not be an ambassador. My instinct to tell her it is none of her business would have me biting my tongue. It would want me to say, "well, we know how to handle our finances unlike some people" or "this is what you can have if you didn't blow your money on gambling and buying stuff instead of saving."

    Enjoy your new things.
