anyone board their pups for vac??

I'm stuck here & don't know what to do w/my lil pup when we go home for a week the end of May.  I was thinking about just taking him along & we bought a carry on doggy luggage thing & tried it this weekend & he did ok in it, but I just saw that it's $250 round-trip on Continental to fly him.  It's not even costing one of us $250 to fly home round-trip!  So that's out.  I looked at Camp Bow Wow here in Avondale, cuz it's really close to us, but that would be at least $320 for the wk, so of course, that's out.  Then I saw a website for another boarding place called Pete & Mac's in Goodyear & that would be about $200 it looks like, but geez, I really don't wanna spend that kind of money on my pup, just for us to have a vacation for a wk.  What have you ladies done, or do you know anyone who boards out of their house for a good price, or would be willing to do it for me?  I just don't feel comfortable AT ALL w/having a "dog sitter" come into our house every day when we're away to take care of him for a few hrs.  TIA

Re: anyone board their pups for vac??

  • We flew once with him and it cost us $200 round trip to bring him back to NY and it was hard. He HATED being in the crate under the seat and I felt terrible because we had to sedate him, otherwise he would have barked the whole time or whined.

I know a girl who does it out of her house in Goodyear but she charges $30 a day. She's great, Dex loves her and her son is great with Dex too. She's great with him and I feel completely comfortable leaving him with her but I think $30 a day is alot.

Just a thought if you can't find anything else. We are having this issue also when we got to Washington in July for my SIL's wedding. We're hoping a lady from work can watch him....we'll be bringing him over to her house in the next month or so to see how he does with her cats. That's the scary thing for me! lol

  • Wish I could help you out, but our favorite place closed down recently (Fidos Funhouse). But to be honest, it was in the same price range, about $30 a day....Have you tried petsmart? Or does your vet do boarding?

  • We've done a couple different places in the EV, $30 a day is pretty average.  Do you have a co-worker that would be willing to watch your dog?  Or a neighbor or coworker you trust to come by your home twice a day?  Otherwise I'd take a look on Craigslist and see if you can't find someone there.  Just be sure to call references.

  • Honestly, as PP have stated, $30 a night is pretty standard.  We used to board our dog at Petsmart Pet Hotel in Old Town Scottsdale (it was right by my old office, and its where she went to daycamp- she LOVED it!)  However, we'd pay for her to have day camp all day, and board at night, and it was like over $40 per night to have day camp AND boarding.  Truthfully, unless you know someone who's going to watch him for you, it's going to be hard to find a quality/reputable place to board him at for less then $30 a night.

Now we have a friend who comes over, and we pay him the same, because it's worth it for us to have her here at home.  Do you have any high school kids in the area wanting to make some extra cash over summer?

  • I would check with kids in your neighborhood who want to make some extra cash or some friends or co workers who would be willing to watch your pup for you.

thats what we have done in the past although I have a client who does pet sitting on the side but shes also like $30 a day so I know that can get expensive. the other option I would check into is your vets office. some do boarding so its worth looking into.

Fido's was the only place that I would have boarded my dogs at too.  Brenda set the place up really nice, but unfortunately she got a little in over her head which is what caused them to close.

  • I know you are on the west side, but I have a really great referral for you! It is in Chandler but I thought I would throw it in in since it is a tad bit cheaper!

They have a rate scale based on small($15), medium($20) or large($25) dogs. The family that owns it lives on the property and we have heard nothing but great things about this place. They stay in air conditioned kennels, but the kennels have doggie doors that lead to an outside area that is still individually kenneled. Have heard from many that it is super clean and the staff is really sweet!

  • Well, I just found out the girl I was talking about is moving and can't watch Dex in July like we planned. DAMN!

If your anything like me, I wouldn't trust finding someone on Craigslist or a local HS kid. My dog is like my child and I really have to trust the person in order for them to watch him. Call me crazy if you want to but I would seriously hurt someone if anything happened to him while in their care!

I don't think I could board him either....he would hate it and it would break my heart! I'd ask your co-workers and see if they know anybody that could do it out of their house.

    Good luck, it's really hard!

My parents took their dog here before and had nothing but great things to say. We've never used boarding. Our dogs are high maintenance and wouldn't do well in those situations. Luckily, I had a great friend who was willing to make extra money and would stay at our house with them, but she's no longer available. We paid her very well, but it was worth every penny, Now my parents and I help each other out when one of us goes on vacation.

  • If you have a hard time finding someone, let me know. We could take him for you. We do have a cat but she has her own room so we could make sure she is in there for the most part. Is your dog pretty good with potty? Is he home alone during the day? Chad would probably be here (my 13 year old) but we are gone from 8-530 ish...  But he's great with dogs...

  • Thanks ladies for all your recs.  I'll ask around some more w/co-workers & stuff, but I don't know & therefore wouldn't trust any of our neighbors or HS kids.  Most everyone keeps to themselves here.

Liz-thanks, I know it's far, but I may look into it.  That's a reasonable price for boarding, in my opinion anyway.

Stacy- yeah, I'm the same way.  He's become like my kiddo & I just don't trust leaving him w/anyone.  I'd be so upset if something happened to him.

No, I haven't looked into PetSmart or our vet yet, but I will, thanks.

Good to hear, thanks.  He's def. spoiled, so I'm not sure how ours would do w/boarding.

Aww, thanks so much Jess.  I'll let you know then.  Yes, he is really good w/potty now.  Once in a while he'll make a mistake, but he's generally really good.  Yeah, he's home alone for a few days/wk usually from about 6:30-5, depends on my sched.  He's usually great w/other people & he's so sweet & laid back.

Aww we loved Brenda too! That place was the best!! Brody would always go right to the freezer for his ice cream at the end of the day!

  • I have boarded Ladmo (My lil Shih Tzu) at Sherrys Pampered Pets (they are a  block or so south of the 101 off of 7th st.) http://sherryspamperedpets.com/Daycare.htm

They have day care there, so maybe you can do a trial run or something?

I have boarded Ladmo here twice and did Daycare for a week straight when we were having our roof done (I didnt want him to be home alone and be scared of all the banging on the roof) He really seems to love it there. HE comes home exhausted from playing all day with other dogs and the people that work there.

I had boarded him once before at the vet and what I didnt like was that he was in a kennel ALL DAY and only brought out 3 times to go to the bathroom and I had to pay extra for them to play with him.

At sherrys he has his own "room" a 5' x 8' space that was all his each night, he had his own bed and food and toys. and then go to go in the play areas (Which are seperated by size) and play with the other dogs and then he got to go outside EVERY hour! I think thats rad.

I would do a trial run with who ever you pick.

  • I know Camp Bow Wow is expensive, but that's where we take our dogs if our neighbors aren't able to help and it's worth every penny! They get huge rooms (they let ours board together so they don't get lonely), but they only go to their "room" at lunchtime and bedtime. The rest of the day they get to play with the other dogs in the indoor/outdoor areas.  They separate the dogs by temperament and ours had a blast!  Also, you can view their webcams remotely if you want to see how your pup's doing.  I'm really particular about boarding places after a VERY bad experience, so we toured before we scheduled the first stay and it's the cleanest kennel I've ever been in.  Highly recommend!
