Ok ladies, who plays golf? And what do you wear?

I'm taking golf lessons at my friend's country club.  Skirts and bermuda shorts are ok.  No spaghetti straps and no halter tops(lol).  So we are thinking bermuda shorts and polo shirts.  Preppy!  They have rental clubs that I can use for the lessons.  I'd love to stay under $100 including shoes, but that might not be possible, I just want to do this cheaply, as I'm not sure if I'll like it or not.

So, what do you wear?  What about shoes?  I would appreciate any PIPs or links that you want to provide!

She found me this skirt at TJ Maxx, woot!  But it looks sooo short and I haven't been able to try it on yet.

Re: Ok ladies, who plays golf? And what do you wear?

  • In cooler weather, I just wear chinos. In nice weather, I wear bermudas. I always wear polo shirts (some Clubs require a collar) and a hat. I've honestly never seen a woman wear a skirt/skort on the course.... Looks more like tennis attire to me.

I have Footjoy saddle shoes similar to these: http://tinyurl.com/42s62ua

  • I would not invest in golf shoes if you're not sure you're going to want to play. Unless the club requires you to have them. For the first year that I golfed I just wore my running shoes. the shoes will make a difference once you actually learn to play but if you're anything like me it won't matter in the end.

  • Michelle Wie wears shirts very similar to the one you posted, along with a collared shirt.  I've seen bright/pale colored womens polos at kohls for the collar for $15 (which may be required at course).  As PP mentionied, I'd definitely hold off on shoes if you aren't serious about going often.
  • I typically wear a sleeveless polo(I prefer not to wear sleeves when I golf, weather permitting), sports bra, capri's(fugly, but I hate shorts), golf shoes and a hat/visor.

As for skorts, I've seen a few "older" ladies with them on on the golf course, but I consider them more tennis attire.

  • The women at my club wear capris, shorts, and either sleeveless or short sleeve polos for the most part. Think Lilly Pullitzer when it comes to playing with pattern. That skort looks more appropriate for the tennis courts to me. Khaki, black, navy knee length shorts or capris is a good guide and then a conservative top, hat or visor. I agree with the pp about shoes. Unless they are required, which isn't that common, hold off on buying them until you need them.
  • Ok, thanks everyone!  So what kind of shoes would you wear?  I have a ton of ballet-flat type shoes, and my Asics that I wear to the gym... What about "dock shoes" or something similar, like the cute little shoes they have at Payless right now?  I just can't see wearing my bulky Asics with capris or bermuda shorts, ya know?

  • My typical golf uniform is bermuda or chinos, polo shirt (possibly sleeveless, if it's really hot) and either casual sneakers (like Pumas), or Sperrys.
  • my husband and I play (well, I'm learning, but getting better), and most country clubs we go to don't have strict dress codes for the courses or driving range. so I don't wear "golf clothes" just tshirt or polo, shorts or jeans, and whatever shoes happen to go with what I'm wearing--I've golfed in sneakers, topsiders, flats and flipflops.

  • I'll be in the minority and say that I wear skorts to play golf. (chinos in the cooler months) I have several Adidas golf skorts and like them a lot. I just don't like to wear shorts. I am a skirt/dress girl. I also wear cool/dry type polos. Sleeveless in the summer or short sleeved with a light jacket in the cooler months.

I got my first golf shoes at DSW for super cheap. Otherwise, just wear some sneakers. You want to be comfy and balanced.

  • I stay away from denim and shirts without collars or sleeves.  I never know the dress code for any given country club/course, so I just play it safe.

I agree with pp, don't buy golf shoes unless you plan on playing golf.  I got a good pair of golf shoes at Footjoy's at a D!ck's several years ago, it was under $100.

Wear a casual pair of sneakers, you'll be fine with those.

For your lessons, a good tip:  Get a golf glove or you will have big nasty blisters by the time your lesson is over.  Buy a glove for your non-dominant hand.  You could buy one at the pro shop if the CC has one.  Or, D!ck's, Modell's, Sports Authority, etc.

  • I really like to wear skorts and polo shirts but most important for me is clothes which is comfortable and functional both for on and of the golf course, and clothes like that I found here: http://www.dailysportsusa.com/
