How much do you pay for vehicle related expenses?

I think Dh and I spend way too much on this budget category. I'm curious to see what others pay.

Here's where we currently are:

Car payment 1: $270

Car payment 2: $353

Insurance (for both cars): $145

Gas: About $600 a month (varies). Last month we spent over $700 in gas (some of it's reimbursed by DH's job though...but not much)

Then of course, there's oil changes, tune ups, registration, etc.

Re: How much do you pay for vehicle related expenses?

  • That seems like a ton!!

We don't have car payments, but come our vacation (the week with Memorial Day in it) it will be about $250.

Gas is probably $300 a month for both (he drives a 2000 F150 and I have my grand am)

I think insurance is about $80 a month.

Repairs in the past 2 years on my car have probably been in upwards of $6k, we have spent probably $2k on the truck. and I havent included oil changes, etc

  • Yeah, that's a lot to spend on your cars!

We don't have car payments but we save $300/month towards our next car purchase.

    Insurance for 3 vehicles ('00 Dakota, '04 Taurus, '10 Corolla): about $115/month.

Gas varies but it's usually between $250 and $350 per month.  Since I'm a SAHM I drive less than 8k miles per year.  DH has a 65 mile round trip commute and he drives a Toyota Corolla that gets about 32 miles per gallon.

Last year's maintenance included a set of new tires for my car, a set of snow tires and cheap rims for DH's new car, and an AC recharge for my car.  Averaged out over the year that's probably another $100/month.

  • We pay cash for cars and run them until they die.  So no car payments.

We have $430 in the budget per month for gas...and we can often use $ from that for oil changes, new wipers, etc.

Insurance is $75 for both cars.

We tend to do repairs out of our monthly Misc. account fund, which was new tires this year so far.

Money that we save for being underbudget goes to the new car fund.  Last few months it has been between $100-$175.

We don't have a car payment right now; we both drive older high-mileage cars (a '99 Volvo and a '00 Audi).  Mine was paid in cash, his is paid off.

We pay $56 a month for insurance for both cars.  Mine is just liability, his is full coverage.

We pay about $300 for gas a month (most of MH's is paid for by work).

We are terrible about car maintenance...we're both overdue for an oil change.  I don't have a category for this in the budget, but we probably spend $2000 a year on car repairs because our cars are older and foreign.

  • wow, this is all good to read...DH and I both drive older, domestic cars (mine is a '98! and his is a '00)...I'm so worried one of them will die sooner than I hope (of course, I believe they will both live on forever) and we'll have to figure out what to do...his has been paid off for years and mine was paid for in full with cash

we have the most basic insurance and neither of us drives far on a daily basis (I work 3 miles from home...he works from home) and both cars are really good on gas

we've been lucky with maintenance...just registration, inspections, battery replacement every now and then, etc...knock on wood

I had no real idea what people with actual cars spend...and we're just still thrilled at how much less our insurance/inspection/registration is since moving

in the future, we definitely plan to only buy used and pay in cash, though I doubt we'll ever get cars better on gas...we have small, 2-door sedans...I would love a 4-door car, if not a small/medium SUV if we have kids

  • A big reason I love living in Portland is that it doesn't require DH and I to have 2 cars. We both live within 1 mile of our jobs, we only drive 1 car. I have a $225 car payment, about $90 a month for insurance but part of that is renters insurance, and we probably spend $100 a month on gas. Sometimes less.

  • I knew we paid a lot for this category, but wow...I can't believe how little you all pay! I'm jealous. We pay more in our "car" category than we do our "house category- which includes mortgage and utilities!

DH and I both made a huge mistake in both getting new(er) cars at the same time, as at one point we were both free of car loans. I blame Dh especially because his car was perfectly fine, but he WANTED a fun, sporty car so he got a WRX (which is a pretty expensive car...at least for us anyways.)

As it is right now, I think we're both upside down on our car loans. We're going to have to look into options though for possibly selling one of them and getting something cheaper and more fuel efficient. As for the gas I spend to get to work, in the future I'm either going to have to find something closer or find someone to carpool with.

  • DH paid cash for his car so we don't have a car payment, but its older so it has had a lot of work done in the past year equaling about $1000.

I pay $210 a month for my car payment and just put new tires ($500) and new brakes($600) in within the last year. I am hoping that nothing will come up with this car in the next 2.5 years it takes to pay it off and then DH can get a new car (minivan) and hopefully only have 1 car payment until he pays off the new one and I can buy something once his new car is paid off... so really I am hoping my car makes it another 6 years or so... we will see :) it will be the longest amount of time I own a car if it makes it!

We pay $100 a month for full coverage insurance on both cars.

  • We have 2 car payments.  We just bought a used minivan, it was necessary.

    Car #1 - $156

    Car #2 - $284

    Insurance for both - $120.00

Gas - this is our killer now since we both end up filling up about once a week. $400 a month.  So not quite equal to the mortgage payment but close.

  • My car is $283 and we just paid off his car.

Luckily his is good on gas as he drives to Freeport every day. And I just drive about12 miles a day. So we are running about $250 on gas.

Auto and home insurance are combined for $101 a month.

  • We paid cash for my car two years ago, and just purchased DH's car with a hefty down payment, so we pay about $115/month for his car. We also have a third car, an '04 Mercury Sable (that I can't stand!), and we are going to leave it up in Maine when we move to Louisiana so we don't have to rent one when we're visiting, and that was paid off a couple of years ago.

For gas, we're pretty fortunate since DH's ship is docked about 1 mile from our house and my job is only about 7 miles away, so unless we're traveling I would say we spend around $200 max a month.

Insurance-wise I think we're in the ballpark of $120/month, and that covers both auto and renter's.

Maintinence has been pretty low of recent (knock on wood), since we don't rack up a ton of mileage, it's pretty much just been oil changes here and there when needed, and I got new tires about four months ago. DH's new to him Infiniti came comepletely tuned up w/ new tired et al so it shouldn't need a lot of work for a while.

  • I spend WAY too much on insurance because of an accident a couple years ago. :(

    Car payment - $240

    Insurance - $130

    Gas - $200/mo. average

Randoms - $10-50/mo. this includes oil changes, anti-freeze/coolant to refill my reservoir which has a very, very slow leak, replacement bulbs because something is always burning out on a VW, etc.

My inspection sticker is due so I need to get new tires at least, probably around $300 for that, and I'm getting a timing belt as a birthday gift this week (this may be the best gift anyone has ever given me).

Good grief. I can't wait till this ornery little VW is paid off in May 2012 - if it's still running!! LOL.

  • My car is 270 a month (I have additional taken out because I want to pay it off faster)

    H truck is 100 a month

We spend 120 a month on insurance for three vehicles.

I spend 250 or more a month on gas (most gets reimburst)

DH has diesel and spends between 300-600 a month depending on where he is working.
