Re: POLL: Guns
Do you own a gun? No.
If so, where/how do you store it? N/A
If no, why not? I have not been properly trained on how to use one. We don't hunt etc. and just don't want one in our house.
What is your view on guns (owning, the laws, etc)? I don't see a problem with responsible gun owners using them and storing them properly away from children. It saddens me everytime I hear of a kid who got into their parent's closet and got their gun and accidentally shot himself or someone else. I know some people need them if they work in law enforcement, etc.
I have considered learning to use a gun at a shooting range. It is something I wanted to try. I shot BB guns and rifles (with pellets) when I was at camp as a kid, and I was pretty good.
Do you own a gun? Hell no
If so, where/how do you store it? N/A
If no, why not? I have very strong opinions about guns. In this day and age, I think it's ridiculous and unnecessary for the average citizen to own a gun. If you're a hunter or in law enforcement, that's one thing (and even then, I sometimes think all guns should just be destroyed, but that's naive and simplistic wishful thinking, and unattainable in our modern albeit violent society)...but if you just have a gun in your closet or under your bed cause you're afraid someone's going to break into your house and you have to "protect yourself"...well, you may be paranoid and should perhaps consider moving to a new neighborhood.
What is your view on guns (owning, the laws, etc)? I think they should be banned and destroyed. It's far too easy for anyone to get them (either from a waiting period at Wal-Mart or from some guy that your friend's cousin knows), and to be honest, there's probably a higher likelihood that you could get shot by some jackoff in a Ford Mustang that you cut off in traffic than by a home invader. (that's not statistically based, by the way. haha)
I understand that people will say "But the Constitution gives us the right to bear arms. It's our god-given right." Well, no, it isn't. First of all, god didn't have anything to do with the Constitution. Second, let's talk about context. The Constitution was drafted at a very different time. The country's infrastructure was nascent at the time, and so it made sense that citizens would need to protect themselves (against the Brits? Bears? Indians? Hmm....that's debateable too!) and also hunt for food, since there were no modern conveniences like fast food joints. People, literally, had to fend for themselves back in those times. Now? Not so much. At least, not in any way that would require guns. Even hunters today probably do it more for sport or thinning populations than because they need to feed their families.
I also think they should abolish cigarettes, but that ain't gonna happen either.
Do you own a gun? No, not yet.
If so, where/how do you store it? N/A but if we do get one, we would make sure to have a locked gun box, separate from ammunition, and never stored loaded.
If no, why not? I haven't applied for my license yet -- that and they kinda freak Chris out...
What is your view on guns (owning, the laws, etc)? I think any responsible individual should have the right to own a gun, and by "responsible" I mean sane, law-abiding, stable citizen. I have no problems with extensive background checks before authorizing a license - do what you have to do to make sure that this person is safe before giving over the power of gun ownership. And if you are that honest person, what do you have to lost? If you have nothing to hide, then having to wait while they take the time to make sure it's safe should be an assurance.
Honestly, I think there's so much fear about guns because not enough people take the time to learn about them. If there were more educational outlets available, and more guidlines towards the requirement to have a general knowledge of guns, their mechanics, and the consequences, I think the stigma would definitely dwindle.
Also - don't knock it until you try it. Shooting at a range has been one of the best adrenaline rushes I've ever experienced. It's been too long since I've gone...

Do you own a gun? No
If so, where/how do you store it? n/a
If no, why not? We just have not gotten around to getting one yet. Jon as gone shooting quite a bit but I have not. We are waiting until we are both trained, have gone shooting together and feel comfortable having one in the house.
What is your view on guns (owning, the laws, etc)? I have no problem with people having them as long as they are stored properly and know exactly how to use them.
youre always going to have people abuse their privilleges, law enforcement or not. remember the huge uproar over the FBI agent last year who shot a dog in the park?
Do you own a gun? We both have guns registered in our names.
If so, where/how do you store it? we have a gun cabinet, a steel gun safe, and several lock boxes for hand guns.
What is your view on guns (owning, the laws, etc)? like i said, youre always going to have someone abuse privilleges. and if you did make guns illegal, people would find ways to obtain them (they do now). if someone REALLY wants a gun and is going to use it to harm another person, they will find a way. i think its better to have them legal, where we can have laws and government oversight (and revenue) than illegal.
Do you own a gun? I don't personally, but Scott owns several - rifles, shotguns, hanguns, etc. I don't know how to shoot any of them, yet. He keeps pushing me to learn to use his smallest handgun.
If so, where/how do you store it? Most of them are in the basement, he does keep one in the nightstand. I tell him it's ridiculous where we live now, but old habits die hard. We will have a gun safe once we have kids.
If no, why not?
What is your view on guns (owning, the laws, etc)? My views about guns have really changed drastically in the past several years. I used to think that conceal and carry was dumb, guns should be banned, they are unnecessary, etc. BUT - I've come to a huge realizeation in the past several years. The bad guys don't have licenses or permits. Most of the time the "bad guys" get their guns off the black market. So you could make guns illegal all you want, and people will still have guns. Look at prohibition - didn't stop people from drinking. Look at cocaine and meth - both are illegal, doesn't mean people aren't doing it. Banning anything likes this is a fairly ridiculous concept because it just doesn't work.
I'm all about the background checks and waiting periods because I do think it slows some people down. But bottom line, it you want to get a gun and you wnt to get it today, you can. If you know the right people. And the bad guys always know the right people.
And honestly, 99.9% of my husbands reasoning for owning guns is pure sport and hobby.
Do you own a gun? - yes. We have two rifles (hunting rifles that were passed down from Guy's dad) and a handgun.
If so, where/how do you store it? - The rifles are in the guest room closet, and are not loaded. The handgun is in the nightstand drawer, but is also not loaded. We don't keep ammo in the house. The guns are just for show. If I ever needed to use the handgun as a weapon, I would just pistol whip someone. LOL
If no, why not? - n/a
What is your view on guns (owning, the laws, etc)? - I definitely think the laws need to be reformed. It needs to be a LOT harder to buy a gun. (You can buy them out of the paper here.) But, I definitely think that people who pass extensive testing and training should be allowed to own guns, be it for hunting or protection. A law was just passed this past election in AR that says that hunting for food is an unalienable right. And I don't like the idea of only law enforcement being allowed to carry weapons either. There are too many corrupt members of law enforcement for me to trust them to handle their weapons properly.
Do you own a gun? I don't, and Clint doesn't anymore, his dad sold his hunting rifles without telling him.
If so, where/how do you store it? Clint's used to be in his parents' house in their safe.
If no, why not? Guns kind of freak me out. An ex took me shooting once, and I don't like how the gun has more power than I do- like I couldn't stop my arm from jerking wildly from the recoil. I don't want to deal with anything I can't control.
What is your view on guns (owning, the laws, etc)? I'm undecided. I don't like guns, but I see why people choose to own guns. I do prefer hunting for food over raising cattle for our food, but I don't think that's something that would change, and that's not really a gun issue- but if Clint hunted I'd be fine with that. Not that he would, I don't think (but his stories of eating wild goose make me wish he would). BFF and her husband are trying to get licensed to own a gun, and I like that there's so much you have to go through to legally own a gun, like you really have to know how to deal with it and understand it before you can have it.
Do you own a gun? Nope and neither does Josh.
If so, where/how do you store it? n/a
If no, why not? I am not comfortable having a gun in our home...I just don't think it's necessary for us.
Josh really wants to get one (for "protection", not hunting) and lock it in a safe or something, but I'm really against that. To me, the only way I'd be ok with having one in the house is if it was locked up seperately from the ammunition (even that's a big maybe for me)....and if that were the case, I don't see how it would be useful to defend ourselves if someone were to break in.
I mean, in that situation you just wouldn't likely have time to unlock it and load it, so I don't see how it would be useful. Also, I feel like I've heard more stories of children killing themselves or others with guns more than I've heard of a gun in the home protecting the owners from an intruder.
What is your view on guns (owning, the laws, etc)? I think it's fine that people own guns...I just don't want to be one of them!

These are all my exact thoughts too, Rach.
Get rid of them too! Shut 'em down. Shut 'em all down! (God knows, the Red Sox aren't using them!)
No, seriously, I see your point. Like I said, I have a naive and simplistic wishful thinking approach to guns/gun control. In all honesty, I think more harm comes from guns than good, but that's just my opinion. I have extended family in law enforcement, but I didn't grow up in a house with guns, and I am a-okay with that.
I also waiver on the law enforcement/sport shooting too (much like I argue with my bass fisherman brother about whether or not his catching and releasing fishies is not cruel).
The idea of stronger laws and enforced waiting period/background checks is great, and might work, but people will always find workarounds. Like neuner said about prohibition and crack. Even kids are finding ways to buy smokes and smokeless tobacco and booze, and that's illegale.
So yeah, it's overly simplistic and childlike to say, but yeah, I think the world would be a better place without guns altogether. So shoot me.
I also think it would be a better place if women made the same money men do for doing the same job, and paid less for haircuts and dry cleaning, but sh*t, that ain't happening either.
Yeah, my opinion on law enforcement isn't that much higher. Seen too many lunkhead townies with a badge and a massive power trip. So, I'm kinda with you on that one. Which is why I much prefer my vision of the world: no guns and hippies dancing around naked.
Totally agree! The law was based on a different lifestyle, but I don't think our current society is immune from similar dangers. It would be nice to basically rid the world of all dangerous weaponry...but it's just not going to happen...I agree with Neuner:
If you do ban them - the law abiding citizens will not obtain them....but the reason you have them is because of those that do not follow the law....so banning them just puts everyone else in danger.
We don't own a gun. I'm not sure how comfortable I'd feel with it. Right now we live in a fairly secure complex and I don't feel the need for it. But, I'd like to be able to have one if I felt it was necessary.
I also completely agree with JA:
You never know when those in charge will become dangerous to you....I don't trust most of our political leaders to always do what's right.

Can I just ditto all of this?
I don't own a gun, neither does Anwar.
My grandfather owned many rifles, he was also an avid hunter. Outside of hunting, I don't think they should be allowed.

Exactly.

I have a Louisville Slugger in my closet for just such an occasion.
Do you own a gun?
yes
If so, where/how do you store it?
in a gun case, trigger locked. thinking about locking the case too, but haven't done it yet.
If no, why not?
What is your view on guns (owning, the laws, etc)?
if guns were outlawed, only the bad guys would have them.

I own a BB gun. And I'm a dam good shot. Danny owns probably around 4 shotguns/rifles. He hunts almost every year, but hasn't since we've been married. We are looking into taking the proper safety courses and licensing to acquire a 9mm handgun. We live in a pretty dirt poor area and the handgun will be used for protection. When/if we get the handgun, it will be stored in a gun box, with a trigger lock, loaded...until we have kids, in which case it will be unloaded and the key to the box hidden.
If so, where/how do you store it?
My BB gun is in the closet. All of Danny's guns are still at his mom's house locked in the gun cabinet. When we finally get around to bringing them to our house, we have a steel gun safe. Ammo stored separately.
What is your view on guns (owning, the laws, etc)?
I think there needs to be a longer waiting period to acquire a gun. When I had my background checks done to get into the school system, it took almost a month to obtain all of the certifications and background checks completed. And I'm really a glorified baby sitter...someone who wants to own an object that can easily kill another human being can get it quicker than I could get 3 pieces of paper?
I don't think guns should be banned altogether and I'm still not really a fan of the concealed weapon idea. Why would you need to carry around a handgun unless you were in law enforcement or going to the shooting range?
Do you own a gun? yes- however, its not currently at our house- its store at my parents house.
If so, where/how do you store it? My parents have a gun safe, and a cabinet- all have gun locks on them and they are used for hunting and wild animal issues.
If no, why not?
What is your view on guns (owning, the laws, etc)? I have a few opinions on guns- I dont personally need one in my house where I live- I feel it would be locked and hidden to the point it wouldnt really help us in any situation. As for the guns at the farm- I was actually given a hand gun as a present from a family member and a shot gun was purchased to hunt. We keep them both at my parents house. With hundreds of farm animals its necessary for you to have some sort of gun to assist in a very bad situation. I normally think that most situations have been handled with planning- however- recently (as of the last two years) a person about a mile up the road from our farm had a pet cougar that they couldnt manage anymore and let it go. It literally ravaged our chicken coop and killed a few goats. It has gotten as close as 50 feet from our house and my parents regularly contact the Department of Natural Resources to report it- their response... kill it. Better said than done- those things are smart. We have had people out to hunt it multiple times with no luck on actually killing the thing. I think it freaks enough people out that they dont focus well.
Other than that- I dont need a gun, just necessary on the farm.
Is that even legal? That's like those stories you hear about people in Manhattan with two tigers and a chimpanzee in a 4th-floor walkup.
