Alternatives to TruGreen?

TruGreen treats our lawn and it makes me cringe just thinking about the pesticides my children are exposed to.  My husband said we have to do something or we get crazy dandelions and weeds.  I'm trying to find out if there is an organic lawncare service or any alternative to using TruGreen. Other than doing nothing at all.  Any ideas or thoughts?

Re: Alternatives to TruGreen?

  • I prefer not to use chemicals as well. Last summer we pulled the weeds by hand & it worked pretty well. It took 1-2 hours every 6-8 weeks. (We don't have any dandelions in our neighborhood, most of the weeds we pulled were clover, crab grass & prairie grass.)

Can you pull Creeping Charley?  Our entire backyard is taken over, due to our neighbors.  When I pull it, it seems to come back worse.  Plus, it has killed the other grass, so I am not sure if we need to rip up the grass and re-sod, or what.  Just wondering if you or anyone else has experience with this?  I would also love to use something organic, because I want K to be able to play out there this summer, and am against chemically treating lawns (although, I know they look better).

  • We have had a little Creeping Charley & were able to successfully pull it. When you pull the weeds you need to make sure you get the roots too. I use a tool like this:

Here are directions if you've never used a tool like this:

  • I know its sort of frowned upon to pimp out services on the nest but I work for a lawn service company. We do free estimates for services. We offer a product that is very environmentally friendly and safe to be on right away. PM me if your interested.

  • Personally, we don't use TruGreen, and are sad that people on our street do. I'm w/ Ashley, I'd prefer to do it by hand, it's just more rewarding know my yard looks good because I made it that way.
