Re: Is your DH romantic?

  • DH and I exchanged gifts already because we can't wait!!  (4/24 anniversary).  He got me tickets to a musical I did in high school and I got him tickets to a MLS soccer game near us (he's obsessed with soccer since the world cup).  I was so impressed that he got me tickets because the first anniversary gift traditionally is paper. :)  I thought I would be the only one between us that would do that!  :)

  • I picked no based on romance. DH can certainly be thoughtful and he's always affectionate, but when it comes to big romantic surprises that's a no-go. It used to disappoint me because his family is very different than mine in the surprise department, but I've gotten used to it and am just more vocal about what I might want.

I should clarify that I had to be like "you know we get each other wedding presents, right?" (which he did NOT) but once he knew he was supposed to do something he did awesome and got me this gorgeous and meaningful painting. I guess that's what I mean by thoughtful, not romantic.

  • I chose option 2!

Sometimes he totally surprises me and does something sweet, like bringing me fresh flowers on a Sunday afternoon for no special reason, or picking me up from work and taking me out to dinner on a weeknight - and I totally love it!

But then there are times when he is a typical "guy" and just doesn't get some things. It makes me appreciate the romantic gestures that he does make that much more special :-))

     Terrific post!!

  • I chose #2!

He's funny and affectionate and very thoughtful...but not someone who will buy me flowers for no reason.  But he's always thoughtful about gifts - he really pays attention to things that I say I like, and manages to get something perfect and thoughtful.  I wish he would take more initiative to make plans, but then again, that's something I enjoy doing.  I made all of our anniversary plans, and any vacations we've ever been on, I've taken care of.  But I'm also a little bit of a control freak - haha

  • My anniversary is this Sunday, and DH had asked me if he could ask me a straight question- are we getting gifts for each other for our anniversary. I said no, he exclaimed oh thank god! LOL I had told him I should because we had decided to not get gifts for Valentines and our anniversary but he gave me a gift card to VS anyway. He expressed recently how difficult it is to come up with ideas on something to do like going away or picking a super nice restaurant and how glad it was so low key for him. I mentioned how a bunch of us ladies here are going away, and some are playing it low key too. I told him I wanted a bouquet of flowers like I had for the wedding and a business card for the florist we used was on his desk today :-)

Like Rachel I guess I will have to be vocal, which is different from my upbringing since my dad is very sentimental and romantic.

  • lol glad to see i wasn't the only one to pick option 3!

he sucks at that kind of stuff - and i've pretty much just come to the realization that i shouldn't expect anything and if i do get a sweet surprise it'll be that much better!

This too! I always plan and book arrangements for our vacations, day/weekend trips and yes,I also did the planning for our anniversary trip!!

But like Allison, I don't really mind, because when it comes to things like where we going, and where we're staying (I changed the inn that we originally going to stay at on Tybee Island because of bad reviews about the innkeeper!) I am much more anal than he is - so that works out :-))

As long as the place is nice and clean - he's good. I require a little more of my lodgings et al, hehehe!!!

Lisa - believe me, to be perfectly honest, if I didn't "drive the horse" to the water on our trips and vacations (including the anniversary one), H would likely not give it a second thought...lol...He is a lot more low key than I am. We are such opposites in that area. But he always enjoys when we go away - he is a bit of a workaholic, and  if I didn't put my foot down and say "we're getting out of here for a spell!" I suspect we wouldn't travel half as much as we do :-))

  • Good to know there are a bunch of us in the same boat with our DHs! Thanks for the more detailed replies too since that explains a little deeper.

  • I picked #3, but I was between #2 and #3. He's definitely not a "flowers for no reason" guy, but he's very sweet and affectionate. He does little things like send me a cute picture he saw on the Internet or buy me a t-shirt he thinks I'd find funny, but he is not one for big romantic gestures. Even his proposal was not that romantic (of course I was deliriously happy anyway).

He did ask a couple days ago what night I want to go out for our anniversary so he can make plans (yay, I always make the plans!), and I've dropped hints that it's a gift exchange occasion so hopefully he'll come up with something to get me, without me having to out and out tell him like I usually do!

  • Jeff is definitely not your typical romantic, but he does things on occasion that shows me he is thinking about me. Like, one day when they had meetings (with doughnuts), he jacked a cream filled doughnut (my favorite) and brought it to me at work before he left town, especially since he knew I wouldn't ever buy one for myself. Or he'll do something stupid, like the other day he bought some smoked provolone, then cut it up in to little bites and brought it to me in bed while I was watching some TV. I told him "yes" when he asked, "So, is anniversary another gift thing?" I assumed I would get SOMETHING...but, nada. At the same time, he told me to go buy a bunch of new summer clothes before we go to Texas in May (and he'll fork over some cash for that).

YES YES YES! I make ALL of these types of plans because 1) I'm anal OCD about it; 2) He is not a "planner"; 3) The planning would all be put off until last minute, and I couldn't handle that!

Plus, any time we go anywhere, I do all of the packing for both of us. I figure it is a good way to pick only the clothes I like him in. Hehe...call me Sammie (sneaky-bittch)

Haha I had to say the same thing to my DH too!

  • I think it's pretty funny how NO ONE voted for #1 !!! hahahaha

I guess most men are just not "romantic" by nature...they need a little pushing!!!

  • I picked number 2 but I'm really in between 1 and 2. DH loves to plan surprises and he does do romantic things randomly, but it isn't all the time, it is very sporadic.
