s/o Benjamin Moore paint- questions

About 2 years ago when we partially renovated our master bath, D&R got me all in a wound up about BM paint. Prior to the partial reno, I bought whatever paint I could find at HD or Lowes. Was never partial to a brand, didn't care, whatever.

We purchased the Aura bath paint and a gallon of color matched paint for our hallway in an eggshell finish.  I'm impressed that the Aura paint has held up to Ken's mega-hot showers without looking like someone threw water down the walls, but I'm not impressed that our light fixture over the sink makes the paint look color near the top of the wall and another color where the light shines on it.  We didn't have this problem prior to using this paint.

The hallway paint, I have to say, has been nothing but a disappointment.  The color match is perfect, but that is only good thing about it. The eggshell is more like a freakin high gloss and I can see random extra glossy patches on the wall if the light hits it the wrong way. WTH?

I've just been ignoring this for the past few years, but I bring it up now b/c we plan on repainting the living room this summer. I really want to like BM, but so far I'm unimpressed. I don't want to spend all that extra money for results that aren't as satisfying as random paint from Lowes. Am I just expecting too much?

Re: s/o Benjamin Moore paint- questions

  • I have random shiny spots on my Behr flat paint where I had missed a spot and went back to touch up.  So it may not be BM, but I understand the expecting more when you pay more.

The different colors in different light is probably going to be an issue with any paint colord except maybe white or something super dark.  Sometimes our bedroom looks gray and other times it looks blue.  It is supposed to be gray.

  • I know 3 people who haven't had good luck with paint from Lowes.

I recently just used the Behr 2 in 1 paint/primer stuff and was really happy iwth it (and i'm not brand specific either - this is just what they had for what I needed it for, and it was on sale) but my bff used the same exact kind (except from Lowes, mine was from HD) and took it back because it was horrible.

My mom also had the same issue with Valspar from Lowes, she said she'll never use it again, but i've used Valspar from HD and loved it.

All that said... I've never used eggshell, but in our house in Savannah I used satin, and in some spots had the same high-gloss issues that sounds like you're having.  It might be the wall itself, like, it might not be completely flat so the light hits it differently...

  • I haven't specifically used Aura paint from BM, but we've used regular BM paint in almost every room in our house and have been really please with in. Before I started using BM, we painted our office (now Warner's room) with Behr and it took three coats and still looks uneven in some spots. Also, it's supposed to be washable and in the couple spaces where I tried to clean the wall (spit up splatter), it's streaky.

In the places where we've used BM washable paint and I've needed to clean the wall, it's been fine.
