30,000 Felons Illegally Registered to Vote in Florida...

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-flbfelons1012sboct12,0,3762352.story

More than 30,000 Florida felons who by law should have been stripped of their right to vote remain registered to cast ballots in this presidential battleground state, a Sun Sentinel investigation has found.

Many are faithful voters, with at least 4,900 turning out in past elections.

Another 5,600 are not likely to vote Nov. 4 ? they're still in prison.

Of the felons who registered with a party, Democrats outnumber Republicans more than two to one.

Florida's elections chief, Secretary of State Kurt Browning, acknowledged his staff has failed to remove thousands of ineligible felons because of a shortage of workers and a crush of new registrations in this critical swing state.

Browning said he was not surprised by the newspaper's findings. "I'm kind of shocked that the number is as low as it is," he said.

Asked how many ineligible felons may be on Florida's rolls, Browning said, "We don't know."

The Division of Elections has a backlog of more than 108,000 possible felons who have registered to vote since January 2006 that it hasn't had the time or staff to verify. Browning estimated that about 10 percent, once checked, would be ineligible.

Re: 30,000 Felons Illegally Registered to Vote in Florida...

  • itIts because in the 2000 election the opposite happened: 10s of thousands were stripped of their right to vote because their names were somewhat close to a felons'. Its was absurd. So now the state, after getting a ton of bad press for doing something horrific, is going the other way to avoid making the same mistake.
  • (a) This article's math seems a bit fuzzy.  The article says that there are 108,000 felons registered.  It also says that approximately ten percent of these voters would be ineligible to vote (meaning that appoximately 10,000 ineligible voters are registered).  But the article claims that 30,000 ineligible voters are registered.  I'd like to see a fact check on this...

    (b) The article also complains about released, pardoned or probationary felons registered without having their voting rights restored, but fails to mention that most felons released after April 2007 should have automatically had their voting rights restored per a new rule issued  by the governor and state clemency board.

  • LOL

Interesting how these stories always surface 12 minutes before an election.

    Confused

  • I totally hope Obama is cheating his way in. ?If so, it's obviously out of unity so us who felt cheated by Bush in 2000 will then forgive him due to karma.

Man, EVERYTHING that guy does is for American unity. ?He's the best!?

  • zoe-yes, in some states it seems that voting rights can be restored.  I do not believe this is the case for Florida.  I do not think there is cheating going on, but rather a broken system (both sides are making gains by this number).

  • Why does Florida have such a hard time with this felon eligibility issue??  Why not other states?

Although, my thought is that if there is going to be a margin of error, I'd rather err on the side of including some ineligible people rather than risk barring any perfectly legal voters.

  • Duh Tef, registration fraud doesn't translate to voter fraud! Who cares?!

    Tef,

Voting rights CAN be restored in FL.  Before last year, it was a very complicated process involving petitioning for restoration that could take YEARS.  This caused the governor and the board to institute a new policy that automatically reinstates voting right for eligible released felons when they're are released.
