Kastle

This is a totally random garden question. We had 4 oak trees cut down and our next door neighbor had 3 taken down. Our drainage has worsened dramatically and we now have puddles forming where we never had puddles before. Is this because the tree roots used to suck up water?

Re: Kastle

  • That's likely part of it.  The other part is probably that some low spots were created by the heavy equipment used to take them down (especially if they grinded the stump).

We had a patio put in & the path their wheelbarrow carrying the pavers made now puddles.

eta: also, trees kind of act a bit like umbrellas (ever stand under one in a rain storm?) so that ground beneath them get a lighter trickle of rain than the rest of the area.  I could also be that these areas were always slightly depressed but between the tree using the water & not getting the full force of the rain, you didn't have puddles before.
