Poll: Wedding Dress Preservation

It's been five months since my wedding, and I still haven't decided what to do with my dress. I had originally planned to get rid of it somehow, but now that the wedding's over it means more to me than I thought it would.

I'm curious how y'all are feeling about it now--months or years after your wedding. For example:

  • Did you keep it or give it away?
  • Are you happy with your decision, regretful or neutral?
  • If you did keep it, which preservation method did you use--the vacuum sealed one or the one that is not sealed, just wrapped acid-free? Are you happy with your choice? Both methods claim to be the best and I have nooo idea which to choose!

Thanks in advance for your advice, ladies!!!

Re: Poll: Wedding Dress Preservation

  • I had mine preserved.  The only thing I regret is my tiara is in the box with it!  Sometimes I would like to get it out and put it on but it is sealed up tight in a box.
  • I used the "store it in my MIL spare closest in a regular ol' plastic bag" method and so far it's working great!
  • Mine was in the closet, but since we just moved, its been in the garage and my husband has been begging me to throw it out. I think Im going to cut some of it up and make a memory quilt with my kids old clothes and some pieces of my wedding dress :)

Oh this method is great! I did this too! :-)

(I should have it at least dry cleaned though....)

  • I sent mine to the Wedding Gown Preservation Co. They are based out of New York I believe. (if you google it they have a website with all the info) Normally, you purchase the kit that includes the bag to put the dress in, stickers to mark stains, shipping label and the box. I think the box is around 250 dollars which is the total cost. However, I bought my kit off eBay for 50 bucks. They were fantastic...my dress was spotless and it's placed neatly in the box and has a see-through window so you can see the dress. Good luck!

  • Mine is still in my guest room closet in the David's Bridal bag I put it back in after I took it off.  Big Smile  I haven't even looked at it to see how bad it got tore up from everyone stepping on it all night!  I think I may get it cleaned and try to sell it.  But I know it costs a lot to get them cleaned so I don't even know if it would be worth it.  Ask me a year from now and I bet it will still be in the same place.
  • I sold my dress, I don't want to store it.  I am very happy with my decision..  Having previously preserved a wedding dress, the wrapped acid free kept the dress clean, but you really have to be aware of the fabric  If you had a synthetic dress it can still yellow over time (10 years I can say mine did) , so be careful if you choose to keep it

That's interesting. I didn't know that. I originally wanted to dye mine, but the place I was looking at sending it didn't work with synthetics either.

  • Thanks, everyone, for your responses.

I've been thinking about it, and I guess trying to make a rational decision on this is kind of silly, because ultimately, my motivations aren't really rational, but total sentimental. The dress doesn't really have much value to anyone but me. I think if I keep it, I kind of want to do something where I can take it out and look at it once in a while. I think that might please me more than sealing it up, especially since it doesn't have to stay perfect forever.

Thanks again for helping me decide!

  • Mine is in my closet...no bag...so far it's great. haha I'm gonna keep it. : ) I don't really feel like spending the money to preserve it.
  • Mine was in the David's bridal bag in my guest room until about a month ago.  We have had to clean out the closet (and room) to make room for the new baby, so right now, my dress is at my grandmother's house (and by the way we just got rid of a bunch of 80's and 90's bridesmaid dresses and prom dresses of mine = 7 dresses total!!! - the only way she said she would take the wedding dress was if I got rid of the other dresses to make room.... and omg, looking at those dresses after all these years.... yikes!)

If this baby is a girl, I'm thinking about having a christening dress made out of my wedding dress, and possible a teddy bear.  I'd have to talk to MIL about it, b/c she's the only sewer in the family.

  • Mine is still balled up in the bag it came in. I have no idea what to do with it even though I have no desire to seel it...hmmm. What to do. Like LeeAnn said...ask me again in a year and I will probably tell you the same thing.
  • Glad I am not alone!  Mine is still bustled in the closet in the plastic bag.  I don't know what to do with it.  I have a hard time selling it because of the memories, but since I have boys I know neither one would ever want any piece of it or definitely not wearing it.  The cost of preserving it is crazy to me too!!  I think the memory quilt may be a good idea!!  HMMM!!  The decisions!!
  • Oh and it has been 3 years now!! LOL!
