BR: Dr. Question

When you chose a pediatrician/family practice doctor (OB said I could choose either one), were they affliated with the hospital you delivered/will deliver at?

If they weren't, how did that work? Did they still come to the hospital to check the baby out?

The OB didn't really specify, she just said "it doesn't matter who you pick" and gave me a pamphlet. The Pedi I'm looking at is going at the same office I normally go to, but is not affliated with the hospital I plan to deliver at.

Re: BR: Dr. Question

  • i know for my niece they just had to take Makenna in to see the pediatrician 48 hours after she was released from the hospital. i guess they block off a certain amount of time for "new babies" because Makenna was born early and unplanned (as are most i assume), so it wasnt like they had a set appointment. they just called when she was born and scheduled it.

i think once you look into doctors they will probably tell you their policy.

  • My OB office also has a pediatricians office right next door, so I'll be choosing that pediatrician. They are also right next door to my family doctor. It's super convenient! It's a small office area that's apart if a big network (Hershey Medical Center) which is where I will be delivering.
  • Yes, and they came and saw Sami in the hospital within 24 hours after she was born and every day we were there thereafter.  And I'm glad we were because we had a lot of going back and forth because of the jaundice, and there was always a doctor on call at the hospital for checkups.

  • My pedi doesnt go to the hospital that I am delivering at.. its really no big deal for me. They have a pedi that will check out the baby while its at the hospital and I call and get an appointment within the first week. Our office has appointments set for new babies this way. We didnt even have to register. Makes it a little less stressful.

This was us too. My pedi doesn't visit the hospital bc there's so much else going on, they never seem to come at a good time whereas the pedis at the hosp can come whenever. We went to the pedis office the day after we came home.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • Our pedi didn't go to the hospital. We just used the pedi on staff at the hospital, and then took Ellie to the pedi we chose for her checkups.
  • Since we have a separate Children's hospital, I don't know how many pediatricians have rights at my hospital. We do have a level 3 NICU but I don't know if it's pediatricians that manages those patients or some kind of specialist. I will probably look into this when we get closer to needing a pediatrician but if our pediatrician doesn't go to my hospital, I won't be heartbroken about it. If my child had any issues they would end up at Children's anyway (unless they needed NICU, then I would want them at the hospital I deliver at).

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • I haven't chosen one yet b/c I'm torn. I go to a family practice and love that it has evening & Sat morning appointments. I would take my kid there but I'm not sure if I want an actual pedi so that they are more on the "up & up" with kid issues (like a specialist). I really should get on this, huh?

Or you could be like me who just called the Pediatric practice of my choice this morning to find out if I need to do anything before Evie is born. Turns out I don't. I just have to let the nurse staff at the hospital know that I want the on-call doctor from the practice to check the baby out. I chose this practice because not only because it's associated with the hospital I'm delivering at but also with the Childrens Hospital of Phila (CHOP).... Which is was really important to us since it's the best hospital in the area for pediatric care. Andplusalso a couple of other moms recommended the practice to us which confirms to me that they are good and well-liked.

  • The pedi we chose also isn't affiliated with the hospital where I'm delivering.  No big deal.  I really liked one of the pedis at my hospital/clinic, but the one we chose had many more amenities at her practice (child's medical records/vaccination history/etc online, on-call doctors to take questions at all hours, not just nurses, etc.)  Like Nat, I just let the hospital know who we chose to be our pedi and she can come to the hospital to check the baby out.  If she can't make it, one of the pedis on staff at my hospital will have the baby in his/her care until we're discharged.

Also, not to insult family practice doctors (one of my best friends is one) but I felt more comfortable having a pediatrician caring for my baby since they're more specialized.

  • Luckily the women I'm using for my prenatal care is a family practice doc so she will also be our pedi.
