Tiff -

Catching up on posts - I'm on the lookout for his 3 week growth spurt. He is 3 weeks old today (amazing how time flies!), and yesterday he wasn't eating very well, and he was very sleepy. My mom said to be on the lookout for a growth spurt in the next day or two. So far today, he's continued with the not so great feedings - smaller, more frequent meals (frequent meals for him are every 2.5 - 3 hours, since he normally goes 3-4 during the day, and 4-5 at night).

And since yesterday afternoon, he has MUCH preferred my right breast. Like, he'll eat for a few minutes off the left, then go to town on the right. I tried to hand express some on the left just to make sure it was working, and I couldn't get anything out yesterday afternoon. I tried a few hours later, and after some massaging, it started coming, but it was a slow start (and it's still that way today). Is that normal sometimes?

I haven't started pumping yet (I wanted to get through 4 weeks of just breastfeeding, and then start pumping small amounts here and there just to have enough for DH and I to go out occassionally), but I can start now if I need to get my left side going again?

Re: Tiff -

  • this can be totally normal. It doesn't sound like he's hit the GS yet, or perhaps he will be a sly grower. :)

As for the left side, it sounds like that side it's a little slower to let down. What you can do is hand express for a minute or pump even to stimulate before he latches so that when he does latch the let down is faster and he doesn't get impatient waiting for it.

You can start pumping if you feel like your supply is well established. Just remember to always nurse before you pump and nurse or pump for every bottle he gets so that no nursing sessions are missed.

I hope this answers your question. :)
