do your parents know you nest?

my mom wants to know who is so important that I would plan a trip up to jacksonville for brunch.

uhh... you know... some people I met on the internet.

haha I've just never really mentioned the nest to her before. Anyone else I would possibly visit in town she knows from when I was younger and living at home.

Re: do your parents know you nest?

  • Yes and she thinks I'm crazy. When I talk about people, especially people down here, she asks where I met them, so when I mention the nest or knot, she just rolls her eyes.
    Visit The Nest!
  • My mom does. I just got so tired of trying to figure out ways I know people, etc etc. It seemed weird, like I was ashamed to be on it. With the Knot, I would just say "on the wedding message board." But now I'll tell her so and so from The Nest and she knows what I'm talking about. Most of my friends know now too.

  • Yes, my parents know.  I've been an internet-chatter since the mid-90's with IRC.  They've tolerated it since then. heh

    Me too :)

At first they thought hanging out with knotties was a little odd, but since I've now known you guys almost 3 years, it's just a matter of life. Plus I more or less dated my H online, so they can't say anything about my also making girlfriends online.

Crazy does, however, do her best to discredit you if I get advice that's contrary to what she wants me to do. Like, "Oh, well, that's nice that your online friends do xyz with their babies, but that doesn't mean THE LORD wants you to do that."

I guess that's the grownup version of, "if all your friends jump off the bridge, are you going to also?" because I'm 12 and can't think for myself.

  • Yes, my mom knows. She's never really said anything either way about it, so I suppose she doesn't think it's too weird.

This totally made me snicker to myself. Yes

  • Yes, because I'd always tell them wedding ideas from my friends. Now they know my book club is from girls I met online. And I'll show them my internet "friends" food blogs.

    Yes

When I was 12 I went to the TEEN rooms and thought I was SO COOL.

You guys are "the brides" to parents/friends. Carryover from the Knot.

    Yes, Efnet and IRCnet.

  • They know and my mom thinks it's nice since I've met people outside of my normal circle of friends.

  • They do, but it all gets lumped together and they don't know to differentiate.  I still talk to the old group of nestie girls and I'm a member of a mom's board.. so my parents just refer to everyone as the moms board.  It works.

DH thinks it's cool that a nestie uses IRC. He's an IRC nerd. Geeked

haha I don't IRC anymore.  But depending on how old your DH is, he might like this IRC claim to fame tidbit.  My first big time crush was a very good friend of Mach's up at UCDavis who wrote the code for alexbot/robbot that ran #jeopardy and then #riskeybus.  I crashed a few times at Mach's house and totally f'ed up his wok once.

  • My mom does.  I don't think my dad would have any idea what an internet discussion board is.  With friends that I know outside of the Nest, I usually just say it's my bookclub.

I have no idea what any of this means, though I do recognize the word Jeopardy.  So hashtags were used pre-Twitter?

Yes, hashtags denoted a 'channel' which was similar to a board on here, but it was live chatting.

    Jen, stop laughing at me!

Yeah, I don't really know what any of this means...  but he said he didn't know those bots. Nice claim to fame, though! Wink

  • No. There is really no reason for it to come up. They live in another state and my mom could never keep track of my friends anyway.

can't help it. How can you not laugh at a story that ends with "I totally f'ed up his wok once"???

Basically this for me too.  It was tough explaining three years ago, but now it's just my "internet friends."

    "Who's in your book club?"

    "Some of my internet friends."

    "Fun!"

It's not so easy explaining to people IRL though without sounding like a creepster.  Luckily it doesn't come up much.

  • My parents know, but don't say anything since DH started off on the internet.
  • My mom knew when I was on the Knot on Facebook.  She thought it was crazy.  Now I dont think she knows I Nest.  She probably wouldnt approve. Stick out tongue

Tritto. I don't even bother explaining most of the time.

I actually met my BFF on an Equestrian message board when we were like 14 or 15... Then we met IRL at a horse show in Ocala.
