Color choices for a shed

We are painting our ugly shed this spring and I'm having trouble selecting a color. I'd like to do something colonial and the goal is to make the shed look more cottage-like. Our house is a very light cream-beige color with red shutters. I was thinking of doing the shed in a colonial red but then wasn't sure what color to do the trim. I don't want it matchy matchy but I don't want it to like like a random color selection. Any suggestions?

Re: Color choices for a shed

  • We're painting our garage "Rustic Red" by Sherwin Williams this spring, it's going to have glossy black and white accents. I wanted something that looked barn-ish to go with our older home, and I didn't want to go matching with the color- mainly because we don't know what color the house will end up with.

Our current house has both the garage and shed with the same colors as the house. Works out just fine!

  • We have a detached garage that we use as a shed because we also have a two car attached garage.  It matches our house exactly with the same siding, roofing, and trim.  It can be seen from the road and when people walk up to our house so I'm glad it matches.  It looks like an extension of our house that way.
  • I would paint it to match the house.  I always like when unattached structures match the house it all seems cohesive.  Red doesn't seem all that colonial to me.  Unless you are going for the barn look then red is great!

  • I would say matchy matchy...it will just look better in the end like PPs said.
  • Our home is brick, but I thought a redish shed would be too much. I would have rather had white trim, but DH said he thought it wouldn't look right, so we went with cream trim. This is the only pic I have of it on my computer, it's when they were putting it in. Yes, it's basically a small house.
