Are Simple Human trashcans worth the money?

In our old house we had a trashcan that slid out from one of the cabinets, which I really loved. But in our new house, there is nowhere to hide it, so it will have to sit in the kitchen. I am looking online for a nice-looking black (or maybe stainless steel) trashcan. Something not plastic. Who knew they were so expensive !?! Are the Simple Human ones really worth it? Dh would give me major side-eye for spending $70 on a trashcan. (Def using my 20% BB&B coupon for this.)

Reviews or recommendations for something else?
I'm not crazy, I've just been a very bad mood for the last 40 years!

Re: Are Simple Human trashcans worth the money?

  • I personally didn't like the cylinder one - If you are trying to throw out anything 12" or wider you've got some smushing to do.  I thought it was spatially inefficient.  Go with the more oblong one.

I bought a cheap $35 one on Black Friday and it's ok except for that size issue.  I don't know whether it is any better than any other stainless brand.

  • I really hated ours. It's now a garage trash can, with the lid torn off.

  • We have a SH step can in our kitchen and I have no complaints. We've had it for at least 3 years.  It keeps the odor out and looks good. It has a removable plastic insert thing that we hose down every blue moon, and we can wrap the edges of the plastic bag inside so that you can't see the plastic bag from the outside (which I love).

  • We have this one:

It's not one of the fancy stainless ones, but I really do like it. Well, as much as you can love a trashcan. I don't think the $50 price (w/out coupon) is too bad.  It fits against our fridge very nicely.

  • Love it. We've had it about 6 years and it still looks brand new.

  • We actually got one a couple of weekends ago, the square stainless, and I love it!  It has a feature that allows you to keep the lid up (which we love for when we are cooking) and I LOVE that the lid doesn't slam down!

We are coming from a small, under the sink, plastic trashcan though that required us to open a cabinet door to throw something away which is a PITA when cooking but we didn't want to leave it out because it was an eyesore.

We have this one, as well.  I really like it!  It has a 'stay-open' feature, which is nice when you're in the middle of cooking or cleaning up, and the lid covers the edges of the trash bag when it's closed.  You can also lock it so if dogs/kids knock it over nothing will spill out, and I've never noticed any smells escaping from it.  Since it has the wider flat side, you can fit larger boxes in it with no problem.

  • We have the half circle stainless one with the black plastic lid (a little cheaper than all stainless) and we love it!  The bag holder is really nice.  It hides the bag and has a spot to put any excess bag width so everything stays nice and tight.  With our old trashcan the bag was always falling down so this is a nice feature!  We got as a wedding present and it looks and works like new nearly 4 years later.

This is the one I have too. We've had it 4-5 years and it's still working great. Easy to clean, fits what we need.
  • We have had this one from Walmart for about a year and we love it!

It's plastic, but we love it.  It holds a trash bag perfectly, stays open if we want it to, and has a lock to protect against our nosy cat.  Great trash can and worth the money.

  • Have you checked Home Goods / Marshalls?  They always seem to have them at mine.  I like mine...I think it is the Simple Human brand, but if not it looks just like it.  But I'm glad I paid under $40 for it.

  • YES! I love ours. Never thought that I'd drop down that kind of money for a trash can, but with the BB&B 20% coupon and wedding gift cards it was really worth it. Our dogs couldn't get into the trash any more, the plastic liner holds the bag really well and is easy to clean. The step open feature works as smooth now as it did three years ago when we bought it. Plus, we wanted a white trash can- not all SS. And this was the nicest looking one we could find.

  • We have the stainless steel fingerprint-proof one (cylinder shape) and we love it.  We recycle more often than not, so we don't have a lot of trash to deal with.

I frequently see Simple Human trash cans in the as is section at BB&B, deeply discounted.  they usually just have a tiny dent.

  • Yes! I wish I hadn't cheaped out though? if I were to buy a new one it would be the full SS one. The one I have now is SS with the plastic cover. Totally worth the extra 30ish bucks.

We have one, a SS cylinder. Got it as a wedding gift. It's a lovely $90 trash can that holds trash. Same thing a $15 one would do. I have no complaints but wouldn't spend ninety of my own dollars on it.

My dog figured out how to push the foot button and open it and now he thinks it's his own personal buffet.

We have this one (in black) and love it! I also have 2 small simple Human trash cans for the bathrooms. The first one I bought because it was the only one I could find with a lid that was the right color, the second I bought because I bought something cheaper and it broke about a month later. Totally useless. The bathroom cans we've had for about 2 years now, the kitchen trash can a year and they're all fantastic.

  • We've had ours for about 4 years and I have no complaints. I never thought I'd spend as much as I did on the can but it was also on sale at Target at the time. We mainly went with ours due to the small footprint and the butterfly opening. We had a tiny space in our old kitchen in which to fit it. We have way more space in our new kitchen and I'm thinking I want the one that has a trash can and a recycle bin in it. Now I just need to convince DH.

  • I can't imagine spending $70 on a trash can. Our is a $12.99 Rubbermaid from Target and works fine. It's not like people don't expect to see a trash can in your kitchen. Everyone has them.

  • I think they're worth it. It's not the look (although that's nice) or the convenience of the features (again very nice) but the construction. I don't want to be re-buying a new trashcan every few months because I kicked it wrong or the lid broke off or the foot pedal stopped working. We did a lot of that before we got our current can. We've had our SH teardrop shaped trashcan for at least 4 years now (probably closer to 5) and it looks and works and is as convenient as the day we bought it and it hasn't acquired a strange smell.

  • We got ours with wedding gift cards, and it's coming up on 8 years now - still love it! I can't find the exact model anymore, but it's closest to this one. I love the inner liner with the bag holder feature that others have mentioned, and it's so handy to be able to open with the pedal when your hands are full. We are starting a kitchen reno soon, and there won't really be a good place to put it, which is really stressing me out because I don't want to switch to trash in a cabinet..!
