Hi

Hello, I am new to this board. Do any of you here know what to do with old CDs? Anyone know of any art projects or something useful made from CDs?

Re: Hi

  • Welcome!
Someone down the street hangs them in her fruit trees to keep the birds away.  I recycle them.  Dh has a "tech trash" recycling service at work, but there are others available, so there's probably something local to you, too.

Here are two i found that you can ship to (since i don't know where you live):

    http://www.cdrecyclingcenter.com/

You can always ask here, but another resource for questions of this sort is http://earth911.com/.

  • Thanks CD! (funny how you are the only one who replied and your SN starts with CD!) I can recycle but I am looking to make something cute. If I can't find anything I will go ahead and recycle them.

  • Indeed -- but my CD is initials :)
I didn't know if you were being facetious or serious...  I knew i recognized you, but i thought it was from P&CE, where a lot of folks mock pro-environmental behavior.  I realize now (and it makes more sense, given your request) that i've seen you on D&R.  So, since you are actually looking for ideas, here are a few (i know you could just find them by googling, but i'm procrastinating, so here you go):

At the restore in town i saw a molded cd lampshade that was pretty rad.  You could make one of those...

(Others may reply, but it's super slow around here these days.)

    Hi Preg!

Glad to see you could join us over here in Green Living! :)

Here is actually a REALLY cool looking lamp base (I think it's cool looking anyway), and it seems like it would use up a good number of CDs :)

That is neat looking!  Somewhere in the links i posted there are a couple lamps that are made entirely out of the cds, so the light shines through the plastic of the cds.  Not the most efficient light source, but they looked super cool.

  • Hi , so I'm not on as often as... well, prolly I'm on enough, but I would bet a school or preschool would love CDs.  If you have 20 or more- a class could use them as a project with visual interest- frogs, fish, sun catchers.  There are a ton of ideas out there and it would make a teacher's life easier to not have to save/ hunt them down.  FWIW, if you start up a relationship with a creative teacher (or school) you could probably donate CDs, cereal boxes, tp rolls and egg crates to them- so many good projects can come out of what we don't use and it's so good for teachers/ those working with kids to be able to save money on supplies.
