in a weight rut...

I also weighed myself for the first time since October. And this was a big reality check. I've been overweight my whole life and always struggled with losing weight as well as managing my PCOS. When DH gets his new health insurace I'm going to talk with a nutrientist which I've alway wanted to do, but never have. I really want THIS reality check to be my last Oh Sh** moment. I'm so tired of not being comfortable in my own skin. And there are so many things that I want to do but feel held back my my weight.

Me and DH restarted the C25K program on Monday. Holly cow did I get out of shape this winter. We're just running 60 second at a time and it killed me! After the wedding we could run almost 4 miles without stopping, and now this! I'm so frusterated that I let myself go so much! Anyways I'm going to sign us up for the Portland Starlight run in June for a little motivation to keep exercising everyday.

Is anybody else currently trying to lose weight? What are you doing and are you being succesful?

Re: in a weight rut...

  • I'm not really trying to lose weight, but I'm trying to get fit and back in shape.  I've never been much of a runner, but I really want to be able to run at least a mile without stopping.  I have exercise-induced asthma, and running really kicks it into high gear.  Swimming, on the other hand, that I can do several miles at a time.  I don't know why running is so hard for me to do, but I've been going every day for the past three days around our lake (1 mile) a few times, running in intervals.  I'm getting there, but it's hard work!
  • I need to lose about 10-15 pounds or so, but I'm really not trying as hard as I should be. I'm letting laziness win and that needs to stop.

I lost a bunch of weight last summer training for a 5K (I did a C25K too), but then gained some back after I stopped running. I don't want to take it up again- I hate it, and I have circulation issues in my legs that prevent me from ever running comfortably. I'd rather do slightly less effective cardio and lose weight slower than be uncomfortable the whole time.

I've had luck in the past with just regular cardio and a healthy diet. It's just a matter of getting the motivation to actually get up and go to the gym. I'm working on it.

  • Yes! Im frustrated also! I just had a reality check tonite at my physical. In the past, following South Beach helped me drop and keep off lots, but now I am going to do the 17 day diet promoted by Dr. Phil. I like it and have had success on it so far.  That and exercise everyday! So hard to do in the winter.  Hang in there, Im in the same boat!
  • I'd highly recommend against working out every single day. You should at MOST work out 6 days/week. Your risk of injury will increase which means no more working out. Also, you will get burned out quickly.

I'd recommend working out 3 days/week in the beginning. DH is following C25k and eating a healthy/low calorie diet & he is consistently losing 2ibs a week for over a month (which is the highest # of ibs to lose per week for sustainable weight loss).

I am maintaing my weight with C25k & a slightly higher calorie diet (still very healthy & high in protein).  However, I am currently a "normal weight". I'd like for my shorts to fit better but I am trying not to focus on a specific number.

  • Not trying to lose weight, though both DH and I should!  We're both getting belly pooches, but mine is coming on quicker than his!

I'd love to start getting into a workout schedule once school is out for the semester.  I'd really hate to begin something now and then have to go through stressful finals and wear myself thin.

I am 5'5 and used to be around 110 lbs in high school.  But I also didn't eat breakfast or lunch because of my stomach illness.  I began actually eating in college and gained some much needed weight.  But I've kept gaining and probably weight around 140 right now.  I'm fine with my weight but I could totally lose some belly fat and tone up.

  • You sound exactly like me. I too have been overweight my whole life and struggle with PCOS.  I have gained about 15 pounds since the wedding.  I was just talking to my sister about rejoining WW.   We are going to St. Kitts in a month and I would love to shed a little before we go.  However, I am struggle to get buy in from DH.  I can't do it w/out his support and he is not motivated right now.

I am not a runner.  I really struggle with it, so I look for other options.  The struggle is just finding the motivation to get out and do it.

Oh yeah I know. I've been involved in athletics my whole like. The recovery time and letting your muscles heal is just as important as the actual exercise. Right now we are planning on 5 days a week. 3 days with the C25K and 2 days weight lifting (bench press, power clean, and lunges) followed by a walk with the dog.

  • miss, you do sound exactly like me! I was on WW for almost a year before the wedding and I was having some success with it not as much as I would have liked but that was my own fault for not tracking very well. Its great that you have your sister for a support system. Have you thought about her being your running buddie? The C25K is a very managable program. You can keep up with the time table or slow it down depending on how comfortable you are with the week.

I'm sorry that your DH is not on board with supporting your journey. Thats got to be really hard.

  • I definitely am in a rut! ?I had a better work schedule in the fall, and was running 3 - 4 days a week. But then in November it changed, and now my only free time is very early in the morning, and later in the evening. ?I can't run outside at those times (not super safe), and we're really don't have the money to be spending on a gym. ?

On top of the lack of exercise, I went off the pill in January, and I quickly gained a bunch of weight. ?I feel gross, and my pants don't fit, but I can't seem to stop eating. ?H and I both need to figure out an exercise plan, and get back to eating right, but it's been hard to start. ??

Good luck to everyone who is trying! ?Maybe we should start a weekly check-in, like we used to do on the knot??

  • I am pretty lucky...I maintain my weight very easily.  BUT I do feel I need to tone up, and I do feel I am inactive too often.  Teaching dance class is not the same as taking it, and once I teach a combonation, the kids do it themselves and I correct them and that's it! DH and I hike, bike and walk, but I need like, weights...and I HATE them :-(

And frankly we don't do any of those things often enough.  I need motivation for that stuff big time.  I use being tired as an excuse a lot.

Food has never been an issue, and I think it's because I use portion control, and I always stop when I'm full.  I cook nearly everything I eat myself, (take out or dining out twice a week, or lunches at work) which means low or no salt, and control over what goes into my meals, etc.

I know most of you girls are meat-eaters, but being vegetarian has forced me to be very conscientious of putting together healthy, balanced meals, because I always have to be sure I'm getting a varied diet with protein and vitamins.  It has made me very creative and open to trying other cultures' cuisines which can be much healthier than an "American" diet.

For any ladies who have food troubles as part of their body issues, if you are open to it, maybe try including a few veg options a week into your meal plans, as they are flavorful and often healthy simply because they incorporate easily digestible foods full of color.  I have yummmmy recipes if anyone is interested ;-)

But for the love of pete can someone make me lift a dumbbell please?? And my bike is in the garage and the trails are two blocks away...I am lazy, I think...
