Delivery: SNHMC or CMC?

I just found out we're pregnant! =)

I am thinking of going the midwife route, and have options of delivering at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua or Catholic Medical Center in Manchester...

Anyone have any rants or raves?

Re: Delivery: SNHMC or CMC?

  • Congratulations!!!

I didn't use a midwife, but delivered at SNHMC. My raves are more for my doctor, as I honestly never left my room.  As for the room- it was great- wifi, enough space, nothing luxurious though- no kitchenette in the room or anything like that (they're remodeling, not sure when the new wing opens). I had a great stay there with no complaints and plan to go back if we have others.   I think the midwife you choose will make all the difference- you see that person for the next 9 months! Good luck choosing!

  • I just wanted to say Congrats!
  • Congrats to you!  I delivered at SNHMC and cannot say enough good things about them... although my situation was a bit unique.  DS was born early and was whisked away to the NICU where he stayed for 7 weeks.  The staff is wonderful, though, and we're forever in their debt.
  • New wing is sched to open I think in Jan at SNHMC.

Where do you live?? Where you give birth mostly has to do with the practice you have chosen, most docs have one hospital they are affiliated with.  A few have rights to mult hospitals, but OBs and midwives usually stay within a hospital, sometimes a city, they need to be accessible to their patients and be a stones throw away.

You can also use a midwife at pretty much any other hospital, again depends on the practice you choose.  Elliot also has midwives, as I am sure St Josephs does as well.

    Choose your practice wisely;)

  • Congrats!! How exciting. I don't have any experience with either hospital but good luck choosing. You can go on tours there, I'm sure.
  • Congrats first off!!  I delivered at CMC and will not go anywhere else, even if I move out of Merrimack.  We loved it that much.  Like Victoria we never left our suite.  Everything that we needed was there dvd/vcr tv, kitchenette, jacuzzi tub and a trundle bed that slees 2 people.

The jacuzzi tub was great for when i first got there to help out make my contrations feel a bit less intense.  The 2 bed trundle was great since my mom and husband were there the entire time.  Also at CMC you and one other person (usually spouse) get 3 meals a day.  My DH loved this.  He got the steak tips for 3 nights!  lol  While my mom and I always got breakfast together.

The staff were all so wonderful and attentive.  I go to Bedfords Woman Care so i have 6 female doctors and was so glad that I got the one i did, although i like them all.  She was wonderful and calming during the whole process and the nurses were attentive, knowledgable, personalbe and caring to me and Connor.  They made me feel as if I reallly was the only patient there.

Both places seem great so good luck in your choice and H&H 9 months!

  • I delivered at SNHMC and also had a great experience there. Even though the rooms are not anything special, the service is amazing and everyone there was great to work with. Plus, from what I understand and was told, the new wing is going to be quite amazing. I'm looking forward to delivering there again in the future.
  • I second CMC - it was great - ditto what Beth said....my nurse who was with me almost the whole labor (she stayed past her shift with me - but left 15 minutes before I delivered) was practically like a doula - she was the best thing ever and helped me every step of the way and was very much an advocate for me when it came to my birthing plan wishes..I really didn't want the pitocin and she held the Dr. off as long as she could for me - it was a wonderful experience through and through!
  • I delivered at CMC and it was wonderful.  The rooms are great, you labor and deliver in the same room, the nurses were helpful, it was so quiet there it is crazy.  It was a great experience!
  • Congratulations! The practice I chose is an all female practice of an ObGyn (Dr. Montanarella) and midwives.  I love them so far!  They use Elliot hospital.
  • Congrats!

Just something to think about . . .  if you deliver at a Catholic hospital, they adhere to Catholic doctrine.

I never even thought about this till my friend delivered twins at 24 weeks.  She knew they had a slim chance of survival, & she did not want them recusitated (sorry, I don't know how to spell it) if there was no way they could survive.

She was scheduled to deliver at a catholic hospital, but when she went into labor her doctor admitted her elsewhere, knowing her wishes & that a catholic hospital would have done anything to preserve their lives.

Just something (not so happy) to think about . . .if you feel strongly one way or the other.

  • Catholic Hospitals do not believe in abortions, but I am pretty sure if a baby was born, without being able to survive, the hospital will do whatever you want in terms of "no extraordinary means" (i.e. hydration, ventilation, etc.) - it's not true that they "would have done anything to preserve" a life....
  • Congrats! I delivered at Elliot with a midwife present and it was a wonderful experience
  • Congrats!!!!!  I plan on delivering at SNHMC next year.  My sister in law delivered there too and absolutely loved it!
  • Thank you everyone! I'll keep you updated!
  • Both are excellent hospitals.  I delivered at SNHMC and would do it again in a heartbeat.  It's going to be even better the next time around due to the new Birth Place they're going to have, ready in February 2009.  I know several women who have delivered at CMC and rave about it, too.  I don't think it's a matter of which one is better, it's just a matter of which one.  Congratulations on your pregnancy!!!!  Sooo exciting!!!!
