Air Duct Cleaning questions

We've been talking about how we need to get this done and there is a Trubate deal today for rotary brush cleaning for $199. I don't know much about air duct cleaning but have always heard that you should make sure they are actually using a brush. Is this a good deal? I always see around $100 quoted on ads but I am guessing that is without a rotary brush.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I don?t know about the brush, but we have been talking about it in our office (oh the joys of being "old").  They said that you only need to do it once every 10 years or if your house is newly built (once to get rid of construction dust).  Otherwise, I have heard it is the filter which is what actually puts the most dust in the air.

A brush seems like it would clean better, but on the other hand, one company that a girl was checking out was really playing up how they use strong suction so that you do not have to take the vents off (which can wreck the paint or rub the paint off the screws) and I would guess that is not a brush.

This totally depends on you.  Yes, the furnace guy that I use and my cousin (who does HVAC in another area) both say that a brush should be used.  You only need to do it every couple of years unless you have allergies or have babies or an elderly person in your house.  It's also a good idea if you've had construction/remodeling done recently.  I have severe allergies so I have our vents cleaned every other year (plus we do at least one major remodeling project every summer).  I also have them sanitized every 3 or 4 years because we live in an older home and mold can start to grow in there.  If you do decide to have your vents cleaned, make sure that you have them clean your dryer vent too.  That's a much bigger danger than dusty heating vents.  Lint can build up and start a fire in places that you can't reach.  I have ours done every other year and you'd be amazed at the amount of fuzz that comes out of there.
