Things to do around North Carolina
I teach and am on spring break next week. A coworker and I are looking for something to do for a day trip. We are both in Winston-Salem and are looking for something within 3 hours. We don't really want to shop. We have been to the Biltmore House and Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro. Any suggestions off the beaten path? We were thinking maybe Grandfather Mountain. Any idea of where to go horseback riding?
Thanks!

I would go to Chimney Rock/Lake Lure. There is a lot to do, you can go up to the actual rock, which has great views and then there are two different trails you can hike to see waterfalls. Also there are tons of great resturants, neat little shops, the rocky broad river is there and you can fish, and there is a "beach" area on the lake. It would be too cold to swim but would be nice to relax on the sand, read a book, etc. There is a spa at the Lake Lure Inn if you enjoy that kind of thing. You can also take a boat tour of the lake or rent a boat.
My parents have a place there and we love to visit even if just for the day.
Let me know if you want recommendations for places to eat.
Have fun
