30th birthday party at local pavilion/park...decorating and food ideas needed!

Hey all, I'm throwing a party for my sister's 30th at the local park and renting out the pavilion.  It accomodates up to 100 people but there will only be about 30 including kids.

There are an overwhelming number of picnic tables that are chained together in rows... aside from a food staging and eating area and a kids coloring/activity table, I'm not sure what else to do with them!  The park is huge, we'll be playing softball, volleyball, horseshoes, etc. and won't spend the whole time in the pavilion.  Any decorating ideas would be very welcome!

We'll be grilling burgers, hotdogs, chicken and sausage on charcoal grills... I'm making a cupcakes instead of a cake and using them to form the number 30, I'm considering standards like veggie tray and fruit salad in a watermelon. Any other food ideas are also very welcome!!

As far as entertainment we have the sports games, I'll make a trivia game, a bingo game (maybe combined? anyone know how?) and have guests write memorable stories about the birthday girl for her to read out loud.  Again, any other ideas are welcome!  Thank you so much

  • Can you fit a pop up tent in the pavilion?
Then decorate the underside of it like this this on the right:

Have a focal area. I wouldn't worry about decorating the tables. That's to much.

Maybe line them down the center with coordinating wrapping paper; which can be cheaper than table cloths.
Make a picture board of photos of her through her life.
Bags of popcorn, lemonade in a big glass ball jar, cotton candy?

  • A couple of questions:

-- do you have exclusive use of the pavillion or can other people take/use tables?

-- of the 30 guests, how many are adults vs. kids?

-- do you plan to use the pavillion, go out into the park, and then return to the pavillion?

-- is there security of any kind, or will someone just have to stay there?

    Ideas:

+ Do a "gift area" seperate from food and eating. You could display the desserts over there, so people can have their cupcakes while watching her open gifts

+ You could combine trivia and bingo by making the bingo cards with the answers to the questions rather than numbers. Make more questions than there are squares, and randomize the order on each bingo card. People would cross off the square that has the answer that matches the trivia Think bridal/baby gift bingo -- when a blanket it opened, you cross of blanket. So if the question is "How old were you when you go your first speeding ticket?" (or whatever), if the answer is "Seventeen," guests would look for/cross off 17 on their bingo cards.

+ I'd be hesitant to have the birthday girl read stories aloud. If guests want to share (roast/toast) her, that's one thing. This seems like it may be better as a guestbook/memento for your sister rather than an activity. Just my $0.02

+ Pick a color scheme. This will help you with all your decorations, and it will clearly identify your party.

  • thank you so much for your help, I love the image with the balloons and streamers,we can probably attach them right to the pavilion ceiling.  the trivia bingo sounds perfect.  I think we're going to do one of those white space matted frames for guests to sign/write on instead of the stories.  Here's my answers to your questions:

-- do you have exclusive use of the pavillion or can other people take/use tables?

we do have exclusive use of the pavilion for the whole day/evening

-- of the 30 guests, how many are adults vs. kids?

    about 10 kids, 20 adults

-- do you plan to use the pavillion, go out into the park, and then return to the pavillion?

    yes..in and out all day

-- is there security of any kind, or will someone just have to stay there?

no security, but pavilion is close to everything else in the park so we can keep an eye on it

  • For the picnic tables, I would put plastic table cloths on them.  You'll have to get the clips so that they don't blow away.

As far as food, I'd also do a variety of chips, maybe a pasta salad or a green salad.

Do you have a plan B in case of rain?

  • one of my friends did the same thing for his 30th. I brought picture frame collages with a bunch of photos of him and all his friends over the years. they were a hit with not only him, but everyone who was there.
