S/O Undocumented Immigrants- would/do you?

hire someone to do work around your house (painting, landscaping, etc.) who you weren't sure of their immigration status?

If you hired someone to do some work and then they showed up w/ helpers who you weren't sure about what would you do?

Do you ever question the documentation status of people who work in restaurants where you eat?

do you avoid supporting businesses where you might doubt the status of the employees?

Re: S/O Undocumented Immigrants- would/do you?

  • I would want to hire a licensed contractor (assuming we're discussing major remodeling etc, I would nevere hire someone to paint or landscape), and so then I would assume they were documented, here legally, all that stuff.  I wouldn't really question any helpers they brought with them.

No to both of your last questions.

  • If I hired a contractor I would make sure they were licensed, legit, etc and that is all I can do. I am not going to ask for the papers of every worker who they brought to my house, that is the owner of the company's job.

No to the other two, because really unless you are checking people's papers, how do you know? I'm not going to just assume or guess.

  • no - I don't really care.

I have a cleaning lady that I pay cash to.  I guess that's illegal b/c she's not reporting the income and she may be an illegal immigrant or her husband may, IDK.  She does a good job cleaning and she's well priced.  I'm sure alot of restaurants have illegal immigrants working there.

At DH's old job, all of their workers needed to have SSN to work there and they took taxes out of their wages, however, they never verfied that those were the correct SSN for those employees and I'm many were illegal immigrants.  From what I could tell, they government MAKES money off these folks paying taxes and never filing for income tax returns.  Other employees were required to be citizens for certain senstive government jobs, that was a different process for verifying citizenship

  • Unless the person wondering is USCIS, I think it's such an invasion of privacy to ask someone/anyone if they're legal. All I'll ask of them is referrals.
  • The federal government, ie f'ed law enforcement is the only body that has legal authority to check immigration status, thus the probability of the AZ law going to the supreme court

  • We have a guy that's a handy man for everything. We hire him for yardwork and might hire him for cleaning too. He's great. We both assume he is an illegal alien. But he works his butt off. I don't question it and all the help he has brought was just as hard working as he was. If I didn't like the help he brings, I wouldnt hire him again

and no and no to the last two questions. As long as they work hard, I really don't care.

  • Never ever hire someone who is not licensed and insured.  If they are illegal, they won't be :)

My husband refuses to hire anyone who uses in their company illegals as well.

Just bc the company you hire is licensed and insured does not mean that they do not hire/employee illegal aliens. Have you driven through Fells Point and seen all the people out there looking for work? Many get day jobs with builders/contractors/landscapers/who knows who else.

I would always hire a licenced professional for major work. I might hire a general "handyman" for yard work and such. I would never even think to ask, hey are you here legally? It just wouldn't cross my mind. I would also never think to avoid a business bc they might hire illegal aliens. Yeah, not even so much as a thought. I guess this just isn't a topic on my radar.

  • I don't think I'd ever hire a landscaper or painter but if I did, yes, I would want them to be legal. I'd like to think I would ask about his helpers but I'm kind of non-confrontational IRL so I doubt I would. Although I am very against illegals, no matter how hard they work.

With that said, I also know it's pretty much impossible to avoid places that might hire illegals (I hate that term but I'm too lazy to type out "immigrants"). Who knows if they are legal or not; it's not really our place/"authority" to ask so I just don't think about it. And I also don't avoid places (like Target, maybe?) that are anti-gay/support groups that are anti-gay b/c it's just not realistic (and I heart Target).

Like Mary said, just because the individual who owns the business is licensed/insured doesnt mean their workers are. And how wouldnyour husband have any idea if the employees are all legal, unless the company had a previous violation? There are so many wage workers that get picked up everyday, undocumented workers, in 7-11 parking lots that get paid in cash by legit companies there is pretty much Jo way to avoid it.

  • A friend's husband is a painter and DH and I have discussed hiring him to do some painting for us.  I know that he is an illegal at this point, and that would not prevent me/us from hiring him.

If I was hiring a contractor, I would certainly want someone who is licensed and insured.  Beyond that I don't care about the status of the employees.
