What/Who started the reality TV craze??
I'm still amazed at some of the reality series that are popping everywhere. Who's to blame, was it Survivor????
Re: What/Who started the reality TV craze??
I was going to say the same thing. I don't remember any reality shows before that.

OK - I've just been googling and wikipeding around about MTV
This guy from the Boston season:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_Duffy
is now a Republican Congressman!
And, he's married to Rachel from the SF season - they have 6 (!!!) kids.
I knew they were married, but had no idea he was a Congressman.
Yes, he was the one who made the controversial comments about not being able to go without his salary in the event of a shutdown bc he has student loans and six kids and 175k isn't that much money, he drives a used car you know.
RW definitely started the craze but Survivor introduced the competition element to it I think - the eliminations. And when did AI start? 2002 or thereabouts? Was that the first one where people could vote?
Yep, AI started in 2002 and it's the first one I recall that involved voting and/or talent.
I'm an old-school RW fan - I watched the first 9 seasons, I think, before it became a drunken orgy in every episode. As an aside, it's crazy to look at the Wiki for TRW and see how many episodes each season was given. 28 episodes for the Las Vegas season? That's a lot of Real World.
I'm Old School RW; I haven't watched since the 1st Las Vegas season. But, I did love the oldies - San Fran, Hawaii, Seattle, New Orleans, Boston. Those were good.
What was the gross out show on NBC? Dog Eat Dog?
They had an article in People magazine somewhat recently.
I think a few reality shows started as copycats to ride the coat-tails of successful dramatic shows, like The O.C. = Laguna Beach and Desperate Housewives = Real Housewaives
I know Fear Factor was one of the gross shows. I can remember watching it with my sister and the two of us gagging throughout it. I don't know what was wrong with us, thinking it was a good idea to watch the stupid thing in the first place.
Big Brother too- that was already popular in the UK and they brought it to the US- I think Survivor as well?
I remember the summer of 2000 everyone being into Survivor/Big Brother and also there was that Fox Show Marry a Millionaire? With Darva Conger who then posed in Playboy- why do I remember this crap?
I remember watching that Fox show w/ my old roommate. And, remember - he wasn't even CLOSE to a millionaire.
