Downsizing big time . . . Closet and kitchen organization?
DH and I are moving from a super spacious apartment with two bedrooms to a one bedroom (prety much a studio, actually). Our kitchen cabinetry is half the size, we are going from two closets (one walkin) to two tiiiny closets.... Needless to say we will probably need a storage unit. And particular organizational tips for a major downsize??
Re: Downsizing big time . . . Closet and kitchen organization?
Definitely purge! Think about how much money it will cost you to move your stuff into storage unit vs. what it is actually worth. You would probably do a lot better by donating or selling.
FI and I are in the same boat - moving from a 3 bdrm, 3 bath, 2 car garage townhouse to a 1 bdrm apartment. I know from moving here that I can fit all of my personal belongings into a small car but he has TONS of cr@p, we'll be getting rid of serious amounts of stuff so I agree w/PP: purge, purge, purge!!!
I also agree with the under the bed boxes, they're great for everything you don't need at the moment. Also, use every piece of furniture as storage. Have a console table? See if you can switch it out for a banquet or cabinet and store everything from linens to kitchen items.
How long will you be in the smaller place? If it's for a short while, then storing your things makes sense, if not then I would seriously consider forgoing the storage space. We're moving into a smaller place to save money, and I know once we're able to get a bigger place or buy something we'll want new towels and things anyway, so there is no point in paying to store them (same money either way). GL!
