do you compost?

If you compost, how long does it take?  It's still cold here, but our seeds are sprouting inside.  I would like to get a compost bin of some sort, but I'm wondering if I'm too late.  Is this something I should've done over the winter or if I start now will I have fertilizer before the summer ends?  I'm in  MI if it matters.

Re: do you compost?

  • I think it depends on the type of composting you're doing. My parents' worm bin seems to break stuff down very quickly, less than a month once it really gets going. When my now-H tried the "dig a hole and dump stuff in" method with his roommates, it never quite broke everything down. I know our metro council offers free composting classes and a discount on bins, you might check with your local government or extension service.

"The meek shall inherit the earth" isn't about children. It's about deer. We're all going to get messed the fuckup by a bunch of cloned super-deer.- samfish2bcrab

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman

  • I don't think you will have t ready for transplanting outside.  Definitely some will be ready for side dressing and for fall garden prep.  We use a tumbler and once full it takes about 4 weeks.  We also use a pile between tumbler runs and that takes a bit longer - with regular turning about 2 months.  Everything is faster in the summer when it is hot out.
