Shower invite wording

I'm hosting a baby shower for a friend.  I'm working on the invites right now, and not sure if I should put her wife's name on the invite, as well.  The friend is the one carrying the child, but her wife will also be the child's mother, obviously.  WWYD?  I know the wife's friends are also having a shower for the couple.

Re: Shower invite wording

  • I would ask the friend. If it's a surprise shower, I would put both names. Would you include someone's husband's name in the case of a heterosexual couple? I know that if a friend of mine threw a shower and didn't include my partner, we would both think it was odd.

  • They will both be the child's mothers.  In the case of a heterosexual couple, often the shower is given only for the mother, not the father, but I consider that a rather sexist tradition.  In a case in which there are two mothers, there is even less justification for not including both of them.
  • I would go with including both names as a default, unless you're certain that no one will be offended by only including your friend.

    Cautiously optimistic.
  • Spoke to my friend and she said to please include her wife on the invite, as well. She was touched that I would even ask!
