Don't you just love it when a student asks you when they'll "ever use this stuff in real life"? I teach 9th-12th grade human development and granted it my first year teaching...I get asked all the time. All of my students understand my sarcasm and we have a lot of fun together but yesterday this one student asked me that golden question. I said "Sweetheart, you're living this...you use it every day." To which he says "But I want to be a physical therapist so what do I need to know about all this development stuff, Milly?" The kids started laughing...I wanted so desperately to laugh, but I somehow managed not to until "Oh, kids just say the darndest things don't they?" and I just lost it. But my first year of teaching is winding down...and I just want to say it's one of the best things I could have done with my life. I love my job, I love my kids and I feel so blessed to be able to say that and mean it.
Re: teachers...
I love hearing these stories from teachers! So glad you are happy with your position! I can honestly say, most days, I love going to work. (You can't love it everyday, but I never dread it!)
I am a reading specialist and work with kids in 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th grades this year. Because of the different grades, I have very different, but very entertaining conversations, throughout my day!
Just don't tell the Kindergarten teachers! We love hearing that we are best teacher EVER -- then you First Grade teachers go and replace us! Geeze!

When ever my own children would ask this question and I didn't know what to say, I would say Someday you may be on a game show and they might ask this question and you will know it.
One of my daughters students from the year before was the only one that never came back to see her. She ran into him and aked him why he didn't come and say hello to her. His answer was "you were so last year" Kids are so funny.
When I was student teaching, I taught a human anatomy elective class. One of the kids asked me the "when am I ever going to use this?" question, so I said, "well, I'm not sure. What careers are you interested in?" and he said, completely seriously, "I'm thinking of becoming a doctor."
Ummm... yeah kid, you're never going to use ANATOMY if you become a doctor! Yikes.
