Apartment gardeners

I live in a 3rd floor apartment with a balcony and wanting to start a small veggie/fruit garden. Any veggies or fruit you would recommend that don't take up much space? Thank you!

Re: Apartment gardeners

  • I did tomato plants in pots and a hanging strawberry plant.

I've seen people to potatoes and carrots in deep square boxes as well.

You can always buy that topsy turvy tomato plant. I've heard great things about that.

I was actually just discussing this with a friend yesterday. They used the same bse to grow cucumbers the same way!

  • I do mostly tomato plants and herbs.  Basil grows like weed so that will make you feel somewhat successful if all else fails ;)  Mint, and tarragon grow well here.

I have about a dozen rectangular terra cotta pots that I do flowers in and that is the border of the garden.  The flowers differ from year to year as I mostly pick up the seedlings that I like the day I'm shopping.  Two blue hydrangea plants, one in each corner of the terrace.  It's pretty large for a city terrace, about 30 x 8 ft.  I have a few medium blue chairs and a camp table out there for nights I have guests.

The entire terrace faces east so I have full on sun from 7 am to a bit after 1.

     Good luck!
