Cleaning laminate floors

How do you clean your laminate floors?  I always mopped my tile with a mop and Lysol, but I heard that you shouldn't mop the laminate.  I bought a Swiffer mop and I'm extremely unhappy with it.  It streaks really bad and I feel like it doesn't get clean!  I tried 3 different types of their cleaner (including the hardwood) and keep getting the same result.  I also think that it makes the surface look extremely dull.  I looked into the steam mops, but there are mixed reviews about whether or not they should be used on laminate.

Re: Cleaning laminate floors

  • I mop with a microfiber cloth/mop and Bona floor cleaner. I used to have a bona mop, but my husband broke it. Now I just put a MF cloth on an old swiffer sweeper. I spray and then mop as I go. Oh, and the hazy issue you're experiencing is pretty normal with laminate. I have h/w floors now but had laminate in my old house. I used to mop and then go back over it with a dry cloth and "buff" out the streaks.

  • We use a Libman Freedom mop (I'm pretty sure that's what its called) and we use that w/ Murphy's Oil Soap & a warm water solution.  It doesn't over saturate the floor and cleans very evenly w/ no streaks.  GL!

I haven't ever heard of that.  Does it actually have oil in it and make the floors shine a little bit?  It would be amazing if it did.

Here is Murphy's.  I've only ever used the "original" formula but basically what I do is put a capful (depending on how dirty the floors are) of it in w/ fairly warm water and then mop.  I've been doing this since I was a kid.  The Freedom Mop is great b/c the sponge part you can wash in the washer (I want to say up to 50 times?) but this is what I use.  Our floors always look very bright & clean, and the solution doesn't leave any sticky or streaky residue.

  • I was wondering the same thing...we have wood laminate floors and I hate them!! Feels like I can never get them clean...I've tried using a cloth mop with Murphys, and to me the floor feels sticky afterward, no matter how little I use. I've used a sponge mop with Pine Sol/water, even with Bleach/water (which I actually like best)...but I never seem to be happy with the end result. BF likes the "shiny" look that Murphy's gives, so I let him do that ;) Never again will I live in a house with laminate floors!!!
  • Murphy's Oil Soap is not recommended for use on laminate as it can leave it looking streaky or with a thin film.  I use a microfiber mop with a special spray made specifically for laminate flooring that I found at Home Depot.

Good to know, although we've been in our house close to 5 years and have 3 rooms w/ laminate flooring.  We've always used the Murphy's w/ a warm water solution and haven't had any issues.

  • Oh good!  Yeah, I used to use it when I first moved into our house, until my mom caught me cleaning the floors one day with it and gave me a "how to clean laminate flooring" lecture.  =)
  • I just wanted to update.  I bought the Bona mop today and I am in love with it!  It works great and the floor looks soo good!  They didn't sell the mop with the laminate cleaner (only the wood) so I went ahead and got the wood one.  I hope it is okay for these floors.  I plan on trying the laminate cleaner next time and hopefully it will look just as great.
