So honestly, if you live far from Indiana, just go to your local outlet store. The selection is less, but for the most part prices are, believe it or not, *better* at the outlet than at the huge sale.
That being said, the sale is huge. It's at the civic center type place in Fort Wayne, but the sheer size surpassed my expectations. It was literally dazzling, we were totally overwhelmed. I wish I'd brought my camera in. There were 7 columns of banquet tables, at least 20 tables lined up in each column, and each table was stacked high with items. Most of the items were in many, many colors. but again, I was not impressed with most of the prices. Flipflops from 2 summers ago (I know because I own them all) were $15. PJ pants in Cambridge print and some others from that year (3 years ago? 4?) were $18. I've bought those things in regular VB retailers on their "retired colors" sale for cheaper. Betsy bags were $29, large duffels were $50, and the luggage was only $20 off the regular price, which is nothing when you're talking about a $200+ item.
We had a few things on our list, and none of them were there- disappointed! Mom and I each spent about $170 on various things for ourselves and xmas gifts. but there were people there with like 10 garbage bag-sized shopping bags of things. One bag in every single pattern available, etc, it was kind of a turn-off. I assume those are ebay-ers. There's actually a spending limit for this sale, $3000 per person, and you have to register to purchase.
But on the plus side:
stationary and paper goods were super cheap, yay!
they had some items I'd never seen before, like the yoga mats and some cute rattan totes for super cheap. The saddle purse, my mom's favorite, was only $20.
Our hotel was almost entirely full of VB shop-goers. These were all groups of women from their 20s to 60s who appeared to have come to spend a girl's weekend to go to the sale. And I really liked that idea, they seemed to all be enjoying it. Most of them went several days (since it went Wed-Sun) because they put out different things each day. At breakfast at the hotel I was THE ONLY woman without VB in the entire place (since I was using a Coach purse).
In summary, because I'm a 14hr drive away, I'll probably just stick to visiting my local VB outlet store. But it was fun to go.
