S/O: Milk

So how much milk does your household go through a week?

Re: S/O: Milk

  • We typically only buy milk once or twice a month at most.  I hate it so I only use it when I'm baking and Jason just thinks it's too expensive for what it is.  So I'd say we buy it for a recipe, I use what I need and he'll drink the rest, but it's never something on our regular shopping list.  If we're making a boxed mashed potato or a boxed au gratin potato, we even use water instead of milk.

  • We buy rice, almond or soy milk - I've never liked the taste of cows milk. Usually a carton lasts about 2 weeks, which is fine because it has a pretty long shelf life. Right now we have 2 unopened cartons above the fridge and one opened in the fridge, due to my poor pre-planning. oops. we'll be good for a while.
  • I tend to buy organic milk because it has a really long shelf life and we usually only go through a half gallon of milk every few weeks, sometimes it will last for a month.  Primarily we just use it for cooking, so unless I'm doing a lot of baking or making lots of pudding it lasts a long time.

This. I try to eat breakfast at home a few times a week, and I use a lot of milk in my cereal. My husband has cereal almost every day, but doesn't use a lot of milk in it, so it works out. Sometimes, we'll buy a gallon, and it'll last a week and a half or so. I also drink milk when we have pasta and aren't drinking wine.  I need to drink more of it, though. Some days, the only milk I drink is in my latte.

  • I can't stand the taste of milk (although I wish I did...it's so good for you!), but will eat it in cereal, and of course use it for cooking.  Chris loves milk, will sometimes have it after dinner, and eats cereal most mornings, so we go through a half gallon a week.

  • We go through at least 2 gallons/week. I ususally buy it on Monday or Tuesday when I am off work and we are always out around Sunday but sometimes sooner. Lance eats cereal every morning. I use it for cooking/baking and we both drink milk with dinner. Lance will drink at least 2 large glasses with dinner and I usually have a glass of chocolate milk with dinner.

  • As a woman I hate to admit this, but we don't drink milk.  I'll sometimes buy 1/2 gallon with the goal to actually drink it, but I never do.  Once a month I'll have cereal.. I may use it with my eggs or mashed potatoes.. otherwise it's not an item in our house.

I feel the same way.  And my dad has osteoporosis so I really should try harder!

I truly do wish I liked it!  I'm glad Chris does, so maybe Carter will be used to seeing his daddy drink it.  For me, it just doesn't taste right.  And for some reason, the thought of where it comes from makes me kind of gag it down.

  • A gallon a week.  Sometimes we go through it quickly and occassionaly we have to through it out.

I drink a glass every morning w/my toast.  DH eat's cereal probably once or twice a week and then we have occassionally with dinner or on weekend breakfasts.

  • We use the Hood Simply Smart so it only comes in 1/2 gallons.  We usually buy two a week.  Sometimes we don't use that much, so we only get one.  Brian drinks milk with every meal but me, only in coffee and cereal

  • We bought a quart of milk a couple of weeks ago and it still isn't empty. We usually end up throwing it out instead of finishing it, because it takes us so long to use it up.   I have a milk protein allergy so I can't drink it and DH isn't big on it, so we typically only have it around for cooking (my allergy isn't severe so I can eat things with milk relatively okay, but I have to be really careful about the amount I consume). I've tried almond milk a couple of times and and really like it, so I might try and convince DH to switch to that.

  • We go though about a gallon a week...we both love Milk!! we buy the 1% were both a little lactose intolerant and 1% doesn't seem to bother us much, We LOVE vanilla rice dream but it tends to be pretty pricey out here...as were milk is on sale most shopping weekends for around 1.79/2.79 a gallon.

I feel the same way.  My Dad pointed out an interesting point about milk the other day (it was a long drive and we ran out of things to talk about lol) that humans are the only species to drink milk after they aren't a baby.

    You have me beat :)

I love milk. We go through a gallon a week if I don't have cereal regularly, and more than that if I do.

  • DH loves milk, but he had a major weight problem and it is one of his trigger foods...so now that he has lost weight we only buy it by the half gallon and that usually lasts a week...lately though we've been buying at least a half gallon of mocha milk besides because I love that stuff and don't really like regular milk...we may start getting chocolate next month when my mocha is out of season again (seasonal flavor at a small glass bottle dairy that does a lighter pasteurization-I swear it tastes better with those two features)

This.  I hate milk, and only use it for cooking and the occasional bowl of cereal.  Since I buy organic it usually has about a 3 week shelf life after I get it home (sometimes longer).  I buy a half gallon at a time, and often throw out half of it because it expires before I can use it all.  We go through more milk when SD is with us, as she eats cereal almost every morning.
