I'm curious - how many of you take a daily multivitamin? If you take one, which one do you use and why?
I haven't taken one in my life, but my PCP found I was very slightly anemic the last time I saw her and suggested I start taking a multivitamin with iron.
I'm a believer that if you eat a balanced diet, you shouldn't need to supplement it with a multivitamin, but I barely eat any red meat so I guess I need this for awhile to balance my diet out. I'm considering just taking one maybe every other day - a few times a week.

Re: Multivitamins?
I just recently started taking a multi-vitamin. I bought the cheapo Equate brand from WalMart.
Just one piece of advice, when you take it take it with food. When I first started taking it I would get nauseous. I then went on the H&F board and asked if it was just me. The girls there said that the iron often makes people nauseous. So since then I have been taking the vitamin with my lunch and I no longer feel nauseous.
Jessie, that's crazy! I haven't noticed that for myself.
City, what about adding in some other foods with iron, if you'd prefer not to take the multi-v? I actually just started eating Total cereal (when I can eat breakfast these days!) because of the iron, because the prenatal I'm taking now doesn't have iron.
I am really bad at taking vitamins. I generally feel better when I am taking a vitamin daily, I think I might be slightly anemic as well and am not a big red meat eater. My mom also swears by taking vitamin D during the winter months.
I usually just buy the cheap store brands.
Funny you mentioned this because I did get a little nauseous on my car ride to work after taking the multiv with a water and lemon. Once I got to work I had oatmeal for breakfast and felt totally fine after that,
I currently take a CVS brand women's multi. I will probably switch to a prenatal after September (just in case).
EDIT: Sorry, forgot the why part. I need extra calcium and recently my doc wanted me to take extra vitamin E or fish oil to see if it helped my weird blood work. Most generic brands are made by the same companies and are just as good, so I didn't bother spending the extra money on a name.
i always say i want to take a multi vitamin and NEVER think of it when i am at the store.
i do however take prenatal vitamins and folic acid and i have for 2 years now. although i dont want a child anytime soon, if an accident were to happen, i would like said child to be as healthy as possible.

I don't take vitamins either. If I need something, my body usually tells me thru cravings. Plus, with the low carb diet, I get plenty of meat.
I do take folic acid and a probiotic daily though.
We both take Centrum. I used to take One-a-Day Women's, but when I ran out I started taking Jeff's Centrum and it stuck. Sometimes I'm good about taking extra calcium (chewables) but lately I haven't. We definitely don't eat a balanced diet, so I joke that I take vitamins so I don't have to cook vegetables.
When I was vegetarian I was anemic, too. My doctor told me that it wasn't just lack of iron, it was lack of protein to absorb the iron. I was a crappy vegetarian, so that may not be your issue, but it's something to keep in mind if there's a chance you're not getting enough protein. Like debdeb, I had to take iron supplements with food or they made me feel sick - but that's true for my multi, too.
I'm very mature gummy vitamins, Costco brand. For some reason I can only remember to take a vitamin in the morning and the taste of the chewable ones make me gag. The regular ones are too big to swallow (
) so gummy vitamins it is.
Edit: forgot the why. No real reason, just because I'd like to make sure if I'm missing a certain vitamin in the foods I eat, I'm getting it from somewhere.
Married / The Cookaholic Wife
I take a multi-vitamin every day as well as a B complex + C, additional vitamin C, and a vitamin E. I know I'm crazy. I take them because I find I am generally healthier when I do. My nutritionist when I was in my early 20's told me I shouldn't need them if I have a perfectly balanced diet, but I don't believe anyone has a perfectly balanced diet anymore. I will hopefully start taking prenatals in September because I have baby fever bad!
As for where I buy them, I buy them online, as does my family and some friends. www.puritan.com seems to have the best prices I can find, quick shipping, and the vitamins are quality.
Oh I take vitamin B12, too, for energy. I know a lot of people think it's placebo effect and complete quack science, and maybe it is, but as long as it's not hurting me and I feel like I have more energy, I don't really care. I've found that some brands don't work for me and only the extended-release formulation works, and I notice if I forget to take it.
LTB: I usually hate chewables, but the CVS caramel-flavored calcium is pretty good IMO. I don't like the chocolate, and I hate the other brand (Vita something?). All the chewable multis I've tried have been nasty. Centrum are kind of big, I guess, but I've taken worse horse pills so I guess it doesn't bother me.
I'm late to this but I take a prenatal multi vitamin that's high in folic acid and iron and something else. I have B12 that I usually take daily but not always. My gyn said I should start taking the folic acid vitamin now to get it in my system so I listened. Before that, I was just taking a women's daily vitamin.
They don't make the quesy but I know my younger sister couldn't take even the lowest dosage of prenatal vitamins so she went with the flintstones chewables.
