I start quilting class today!
My friend and I decided to take a class together, and picked quilting. I'm so excited but also stressed about choosing fabrics today at class. How do you pick fabrics that go together but aren't too matchy? I'm thinking browns, creams and blues to go with a duvet that is navy damask stripe. Any suggestions?
Re: I start quilting class today!
Have fun in your class! What pattern quilt are you making?
I find the fabric choosing thing kind of intimidating. Maybe that's why my first quilt was black and white, with a little pink.lol
Does the place you are taking lessons have any quilt kits? I found this to be very helpful when I first started quilting. I didn't have to pick the colors, because that was already done for me. The kit will include all of the fabrics that you need in the correct yardage for the pattern. The only thing you have to decide is what fabric you want for the back - the kits lists the amount of yardage for the back. My local quilt shop just had a class and there was one pattern, but 3 different color combination kits available. If your LQS doesn't have a kit available - there are a couple of online stores/websites that offer kits like Fat Quarter Shop and Burgundy Buttons.
Another option would be go choose fabrics from a designer's line of fabric. Ex: Central Park by Kate Spain. All of the fabric from that line would mix and match with the other fabrics within that line. You don't have to work about matching colors and trying to figure out which colors to use. Another fabric line that I would recommend is Moda's Sunkissed by Sweetwater. The prints on the fabric is small, they all match, and you don't have to worry about the direction the fabric being upside down.
