Last night I went to see my Uncle who is in the hospital for the 2nd time in 2 weeks.
He was there last week because he was vomiting constantly for 5 days. He had esophogeal CA 6 years ago- they removed his esophagus and moved his stomach up. His stomach is as big as a fist and it wasn't emptying.. Anyways; he was in the hospital for 5 days for that.
They d/c him on Saturday..he could not walk, and his eye was drooping.
Saturday my aunt called my cousin bc she said my uncle was getting worse..still unable to walk, and he was delusional..eye was even droopier.
They took him to the hospital around midnight Saturday night.. he is still completely out if. He has no idea what year it is. He recognizes you one second, and doesn't the next.
He had multiple issues prior to this happening; cirrhosis of the liver;hep C, hx of cancer...He was an alcoholic 25yrs ago..drugs..whatever, the whole 9 yds.
Now he has encephalopathy (essentially it's a brain infection) which is not always reversible...and liver failure. The liver failure is the cause of the encephalopathy.
The hospital he is at is ridiculous. Last night there was talk of transferring him to a bigger hospital. He had an MRI on Monday afternoon and no one ever came to tell the family the results.. They finally got the hospital admin(who my sister is friends with) to call the Dr. The Dr. FINALLY called back told my cousin that this was chronic thing and that he's been like this for awhile. (and that's why the neuro never talked to the family..."bc they already knew he was like this')
Prior to going into the hosp. for the vomiting he was driving himself around; playing cards, picking up his grandkids from school.. He was not like this.
It's hard bc it seems like the hospital has just written him off completely.
It just seems like they are doing as little as possible. I would have thought w/ his history of liver issues they would be a little more proactive in trying to figure out the whole picture.
anyways.this is so freakin' long and kudos to you if you made it this far.
The best thing that came out of this whole thing is that my Dad went to see his brother for the first time in years.
Re: T&PS ..it's long . I mostly just need to get it out.

OMG. This is horrible. I hope to never have to go to that hospital. How could they not give MR results because they assume the family already knows? Im assuming there is no previous study to compare it to, so that alone should tell the doctor that the family does not know this.
I hope he is able to get some quality care and gets better. And kudos to your dad for going to see him
T & P to you family. Boo on that hospital. I can't stand it when people do as little as possible to for whatever reason.
I'm glad, though, that your dad saw his brother. I hope he gets better and their relationship can continue to grow.
