Do you know of any LO's that had hip surgery or were in a body cast.....

Hi all - I'm helping a fellow nestie by asking on my local board. Her daughter had hip surgery last week because of severe dysplasia. Unfortunately, due to severity and her cast, she does not fit into the hippo car seat. The seat before the hippo is a Spelcast 1 but has been discontinued. She knows that it will be older and has expired. However, they are house bound right now. If they don't find an alternative, the only way to get to her doctor appointments/checkups is by ambulance. If you know of anyone that has had this type of surgery, can you please check to see if they may have this Spelcast 1 seat sitting around. TIA!

I can't believe that the hospital or clinic didn't help your friend find one before they left.  Could she check with a social worker for that clinic to see if they could help?  They would probably be able to access info on previous patients who might have had to use those car seats and possibly try to connect parents to each other.  Not sure where the surgery was done, but could possibly check with Gillette's adaptive equipment dept to see if they could help at all.... although if she hasn't been seen there yet, would probably need to go there to get fit, which would require a ride there...

She is in NJ and surgery was at CHOP. They have not been very helpful. : (. They are the ones that told her the only option is ambulance to get home. She is a RN so she has already gone through several resources. Everyone she talks to says the "hippo" seat is the only option but her daughter doesn't fit in it.

That would be wonderful. She is 4 1/2 months (born Dec 9th). Casted she is 21" and 18 lbs. Without the cast she is 24.5" and 6 kgs. The main issue is she I casted straight and wide. Normally it is one way or the other. She is 18" wide from pinky toe to pinky toe. Everyone keeps telling her the hippo seat (which they have) but because of the straight and wide she doesn't fit into the seat.

you could see if there was a company like Gillette out near her?  search for orthotics & prosthetics companies...

Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions. They are getting a custom car bed made and will be delivered on Wednesday. It's not cheap (about $1000) but cheaper than medical transportation.
