Maternity Clothes

I'm so happy this week is going by so much faster than last week! Anyway....

I think i will be shopping for maternity clothes soon. Where do you ladies shop? What kind of pants do you like more (below belly, or with the support)?

Thanks!

Re: Maternity Clothes

  • I always had luck with pants at Motherhood.  Shirts I was able to get just about anywhere.  I perfered the over the belly for the support.  But, I am also a bigger mama and I know a lot of people like the below the belly pants.  I never had a nice big belly (if you saw me on the street you wouldn't have known I was pregnant).  I did have one pair of below the belly pants that just were not comfortable for me.
  • Ugh, I hated maternity pants.  In the beginning of my pregnancy I was able to wear the pants that just had the thick elastic band around the waist, which are the most comfortable IMO.  As I got further along those pants were too tight, especially when I sat down and I had to buy pants with the full belly panel.  Those were great when I was sitting, but they sucked for walking around/standing up.  I felt like I was CONSTANTLY pulling up my pants because they would start to slip down.

As for where I bought my pants?  I really hated Motherhood, but I did have a few pair of jeans from there that I wore regularly.  I also got a bunch for Target but they didn't have a huge selection.  I actually got most of my pants are Ross especially at the end of my pregnancy when I refused to spend high dollar on any more maternity clothes that made me feel like a fat whale.  I got about 6 pairs from Ross for about $8.99

Also, I wanted to mention maternity shirts, I had a few from maternity stores but most of mine were tunics from non-maternity stores.  They were great because they were long and covered my belly.  Plus they were so much more stylish than maternity clothes and CHEAPER!!

  • Since you will be carrying the baby through the summer, under the belly is the way to go.  Also, I wore a crapton of dresses.  You don't realize how hot your crotch can get until you have your pregnancy belly plopped on top of your thighs.  By month 7 or 8, pants were totally out of the question for me.  It was dresses, skirts and shorts all the way.

I picked up a lot of great stuff at Old Navy and Gap.  Gap even has a maternity section in the Orlando International mall.  I found a LOT of cheap stuff at Sears, surprisingly - I picked up a lot of great work button-downs for $2-3/each.  Sometimes, Kohl's has some cute maternity stuff, too.

ETA:  Ann Taylor has maternity now, as well.  They carried maternity before, quit carrying when I was pregnant and have started again.  Totally pissed me off.

  • I'm hitting up Motherhood Outlet at Ellenton this weekend.  I have already picked up a few different shorts and stuff at Ross on clearance.  I also bought a crapload of summer dresses at Ross - the stretchy kind, nothing that zips up - as I figured I would want them this summer.
  • With my first pregnancy, I was able to get away with just below the belly pants, but with number 2 I had to add some over the belly ones.  I'm pretty skinny in the hips so I had a hard time finding pants.  I ended up paying more than I would have liked and buying mine from GAP because theirs come in actual sizes (not just this S-M-L crap).  I also got some cute maternity clothes from H&M for pretty cheap.  Those were my go-to places last time.
  • I am a plus sized mama, so I shopped Old Navy Online for some staples (a black dress that I can dress up or down according to occasion, flip flops, some yoga shorts, and a longer pair of yoga pants)  Everything else I have came from the Goodwill store - most of name brand and maybe worn once.

I did check out the Motherhood Maternity store at Wiregrass, but the plus-size selection in store in pathetic and I was not about to pay $50 for a pair of jeans.  No way, no how.

I can't fit into anything top or bottom wise at Kohls, but the stuff there is kind of cute...just try to buy it sale.

I like the below to belly stuff while I was just a little bigger, but now I am all about the full panel - esp. since I sit at a desk for most of the day.  Also, remember that as you get bigger and you "pop" the baby will change positions and it will make your clothes fit differently.

I do wish I had more bermuda length shorts, more short sleeve ones (my mom bought a ton of winter clothes because she thought with twins I would be huge while it was cold out.), and MORE SKIRTS/DRESSES

And get a bathing suit, too, if you can find a good price.  Old Navy ran out of the clearance one I was going to buy, so I just wear the aforementioned yoga shorts and my old tankini top, when I go swimming.

  • Thanks girls. =) I'm not really a dress person but i'm thinking that's probably what i'll end up wearing most this summer. I'm DREADING the heat. It's already hot. Ugh...

I used to point my car air vents up my dress/skirt on my way home from work.

  • Oh, speaking for my experience, I bought a ton of capris and knee length dresses to wear early on in my pregnancy.  Not that I think this will happen to you but after I hit the 6th month mark I couldn't wear anything that showed my ankles.  I swelled like a biitch, more than I have even seen another person swell.  I was not about to show my ankles out in public so all those clothes I bought hoping I could wear later in my pregnancy ended up staying in my closet.  What a waste :(  I just thought I would mention my experience.  My advice would be to buy the least amount of clothes as possible because it was shocking how quickly my body changed......and not in a good way.

Check out this link to see my ankles.  They were gross!

Ditto. Although I was still able to wear some of the pants with the thick elastic band toward the end, they just sat lower under my bump. I had a lot of luck at consignment sales/stores and Burlington Coat Factory. I bought a lot of stuff on oldnavy.com (and have heard great things about gap.com), but my ON purchases would have been a lot more useful if I could have tried them on in advance. From what I've heard, they've phased out their in-store maternity options. And in terms of being pregnant through the heat of the summer (DD was born 7/31/10), I was fine because the A/C at work is ice cold, and when I was home I was in some form of sweat pants at almost all times :) If I went out I wore skirts or some maternity shorts.
