Q of the day

Since I'm sure CDmay will get tired of doing these herself every day, I figured I'd help. Smile

1.) If you're growing tomatoes, what's your favorite variety and why?  If you don't grow your own, what's your favorite variety to eat?

2.) What's your favorite home-cooked meal?

Re: Q of the day

  • 1.) If you're growing tomatoes, what's your favorite variety and why?  We're growing 'Jaun Flamme' for the first time this year, and I am beyond excited.  Seriously, it's a little nuts how excited I am about this tomato.

    image'JAUNE FLAMME' ORANGE TOMATO

An old French variety, 'Jaune Flamme' is a fabulous fresh-eating tomato with an explosive, intense flavor that shines through any salad dressing with ease.

The outer walls are thick and meaty, with just enough juice to provide a full-bodied, citrus-like flavor that surprises all who try it for the first time. The real joy is cutting into one. The yellow-orange skin yields to beautiful red-mottled flesh inside.

Although this heirloom is excellent for fresh salads, it reaches its full potential as a drying tomato. It has such an exquisite flavor that I use it exclusively when baking, especially in breads.

A joy to grow as well as to eat, the plants are indeterminate (bearing fruit continuously) and early producers, and seem resistant to many diseases that normally plague tomatoes. The fruits are held in clusters of six to eight, each fruit the size of a golf ball or slightly larger.

If you don't grow your own, what's your favorite variety to eat?
Cherokee Purple.   They make the best tomato sandwiches.

2.) What's your favorite home-cooked meal? Eggplant Parmesean, when I'm inclined to make such a complicated meal.  A floppy wet breaded thing from a restaurant cannot compare with thickly sliced eggplants from the Farmer's Market and our own tomato sauce.  MMMMmm.......

Aw, thanks!  You're on the other coast, too, so it makes it easier to get in here bright and early when i drop the ball :)

1.) If you're growing tomatoes, what's your favorite variety and why?  If you don't grow your own, what's your favorite variety to eat?
Dh grows them and eats them.  I only really like tomatoes if they are in sauces, so Roma and plum varieties are my preference.  I think he has three varieties this year (one for slicing, two for sauces/canning), all heirloom.

    2.) What's your favorite home-cooked meal?
Homemade pizza, salad with pickled beets, pecans and chevre and red wine, with strawberries or a fresh-baked cookie for dessert.

Whichever kind you guys grow... who wants to mail me some?! Stick out tongue

    2.) What's your favorite home-cooked meal?

My dad's caesar salad, my mom's sun-dried tomato/basil pesto/roasted veggie paninis, SO's grilled tofu steaks in ginger & lemon marinade. (It's too hard to pick just one.)

  • 1.) If you're growing tomatoes, what's your favorite variety and why?  If you don't grow your own, what's your favorite variety to eat?  The past few years I've grown cherry tomatoes but we end up with so many, I end up giving most of them away.  This year I want to try Roma tomatoes- anyone have a suggestion for a good heirloom?2.) What's your favorite home-cooked meal? This is a toughie!  I love to cook but if I have to choose, it would be lasagna with turkey sausage and spinach.

  • 1) I'm growing Yellow Pear, which I've grown before. image

They're fun looking and tasty. I'm hoping I can get them to start from seed this year. Last year, I got zero sun for all of May, and they died. Also started: cherry, tiny tim, brandywine, and roma.

    2) I like all kinds of food. Thai basil chicken is yummy.

  • 1.) If you're growing tomatoes, what's your favorite variety and why?  If you don't grow your own, what's your favorite variety to eat? We're growing Abe Lincolns.  Last year, DH got a few starter plants from a co-worker and loved these the best, so he ordered the seeds and we're doing them again this year.

2.) What's your favorite home-cooked meal?  That's a really hard question, but I'm going to have to go with mac & cheese casserole, preferably with broccoli.

  • 1. We grew 2 types of tomatoes last year and you know I can't remember what kind off hand but they were yummy!

    2. Oh man I can't pick! Probably comfort food like lasanga, salad and garlic bread.
