cheap things to do city/burbs?

$$ is tight and we're bored!  what are some fall festivals, activities, etc. that are less expensive to do in the city or burbs?

Check out Time Out (mag or online) for weekly events.  They usually have a pretty good selection of free listings.  Not sure where you are, but one of my favorite budget things to do is just to pick a random new neighborhood and go for a walk.  There's almost always a cute cheap lunch spot, or even just a little coffee shop to grab something to drink, or a park to lounge in.

check out the chicago botanical gardens in glencoe.  it's a great place to walk around in the summer and fall.

Goldstar (https://www.goldstar.com/join?p=F480624RP) has cheap tickets to events around the city.  They send a weekly email of plays, comedy, spas, etc that are selling at a discounted price.

I agree with the pp on Time Out Chicago- there is usually a lot of things in there include festivals and such. I think they have a section for free events/activities.  We love to just walk around different neighborhoods - this time of year is perfect for that.  We have been doing a lot of walks in different Nature Preserves- they are pretty right now and all a little bit different.
