Shellac Manicure

Has anyone had a shellac manicure? If so, did you like it and where did you get it done?

Re: Shellac Manicure

  • I have not had the shellac manicure but my guy friend did and loved it.  I couldn't believe how awesome his nails looked afterwards.  He did a clear/pale pink coat.

I believe he had it done at Spalon in Edina but I'm sure they all do it.

  • I've had it done a lot here in Chicago. It's fantastic in comparison to a regular manicure because it lasts about 2 weeks with absolutely no chips - sometimes 3. The downside, though, is that you have to really be committed to going back every 2-3 weeks religiously. It's not something you can easily remove yourself and it's much more like having a nail fill than a manicure.

So if you're the type of person who gets manicures regularly, it's a great thing to do because it spaces out your manis. But if you're looking for a one time thing, the hassle of removal will be too great to make it worth it.

  • I have gotten it done before and I loved that it stayed on for 2 weeks without chipping. I think almost any salon that you go to now does shellac manicures.

I asked the nail tech if it was harder to get off and she said it was. She told me to soak a cotton ball in acetone and then wrap it in tin foil around my nail. I did this and I had to scrape to get the nail polish off (and that didn't even get it all off). So, the next day I went to another nail salon and had them remove it. After 15 minutes of soaking and another 10 minutes of grinding the nail polish was finally off!

  • I cannot keep nail polish on my fingers for the life of me.  If two days have gone by and my newly manicured nails are not yet chipped it is a miracle.

Several months ago I go in for a manicure and they asked me if I would like to upgrade to Shellac polish, which they said would last for two weeks, I said sure.  I never expected it to last for two weeks, but I thought it just might make it through my meetings.

Well, it turns out it is pretty good stuff.  I was chip-free for about 12 days.

I really liked it, but after 12 day I had to go back in to get them redone.  It was a pain to get the polish off; it takes a lot longer than removing normal polish.  Once the polish was off, the whole thing doesn?t take very long (you don?t have to sit and dry once they finish).

However, something went wrong the second time.  I was getting a French manicure and I was using bright white for the tips this time (the first time I used natural white).  I think something might have been wrong with the new polish because the woman put it on and the tips bubbled.  She had to scrap it all after retrying individual fingers three times.  She started completely over with natural white.  By the time I left I had been there two hours so I liked it a bit less, but again.

I went back again two weeks later (I have never maintained a manicure schedule, but I really liked the long lastingness of it and how I avoided biting my nails when I had them on).  I had peeled off most of the polish myself (when one chipped I started gnawing on the top, realized it peeled the paint off and did it to the rest) and the manicure went fast, but the lady next to me had the bubbling problem that I had last time.

I went to Nails 3000 in Shoreveiw and it was $32.
