XP: Silly question re: using an iPhone abroad
I also posted this on the travel board. DH and I are going to Japan on Sunday. I have an iPhone through Verizon. Will I be able to use the phone in airplane mode in Japan without being charged? I'd like to be able to use the camera and iPod functions, but I'm worried about getting a crazy bill. TIA!

Here's how AT&T works not sure if it's the same for Verizon.
Turn on airplane mode and turn on wifi.
Any place you can pick up a wifi signal you can use your phone (as a computer not as a phone) and not get charged. I did that while we were in Antigua last month and I was able to use all my apps and surf the web.
As an FYI, when traveling outside the us I always keep my phone on airplane mode that way I don't have to worry about accidentally getting charged.
Btw, you can use the camera and iPod regardless, they are not data related.

Actually, Japan is one of the few countries that uses CDMA almost exclusively.
I believe Verizon uses CDMA2000 technology, which may or may not be able to roam in Japan. Since there was talk of rolling out the CDMA iPhone to Japan and other Asian markets earlier this year, I would guess that technology-wise it should be possible to use it, so you should ask Verizon about the possibility of roaming.
