MM Spin Off: What have you done to be Greener this week?

HAPPY EARTH DAY!

We do this on Fridays on MM re: saving $ (obviously, there's a lot of overlap)

This week I did the usual: recycled, reused the few plastic bags I still use, bought eggs from my local egg farm, went to the farmers' market, cooked everything at home from scratch except birthday dinner, walked to the store, turned off appliances and lights, used non-toxic cleaners...

And: cut up old Tshirts for rags, had a DIY home spa day for my birthday with all homemade stuff and new non-toxic nail polish. Having hair cut at ecosalon tomorrow. Gathered up a few things for Goodwill.

EVERY Day is EARTH DAY!

Re: MM Spin Off: What have you done to be Greener this week?

  • We sold our car nearly four years ago, and we have walked/biked/taken public transportation since then. The bike that I have been using for two years bit the dust (it was a vintage hand-me-down, so it was inevitable), and DH and I finally went ahead and purchased a cargo bike on Monday! I will be able to not only cart my daughter around but also will be able to get our weekly grocery trips out of the way with one swoop! I am so excited.

We went with the Madsen bike. I like how it handles more so than the bikes with the cargo box in the front.

I know that purchasing something brand new is not Earth friendly, but the bike will continue to allow us to live our car-free lifestyle. I have been trying my hardest not to use public transportation much, and now I can't see us taking it more than few times a year.

Other green things from this week: Recycling, using reusable bags and refusing plastic bags,  buying locally sourced milk and eggs from our co op, unplugging appliances when they aren't being used, keeping our heat at 64/65 and wearing layers, giving baby items and other random items away on Craig's List instead of tossing, used non-toxic cleaning products,  probably going to make bread today (never buy bread any more), had a few meatless meals..

  • I want to be able to say i've done great things in this department this week, but i've done a particularly bad job... that said, i'm vegetarian/low dairy, i prefer walking/public transit (bike, when it's not as wet as its been here), i bundle > use elec heat, conserve water/elec/ect., recycle/reuse/compost, so i keep my footprint reasonably small overall.
